AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Melbourne, April 4. The Irish citizens of Melbourne presented an address to tbe Earl of Aberdeen and an album of Victorian views to the Countess, at tbe Town Hall tori ay. The Mayor of Melbourne presided. In replying to the address, Lord Aberdeen declared his steadfast adherence to Home Rule for Ireland and his convic'ion that it would ensure peace to Ireland and the maintenance of the integrity of the Empire. Lord Aberdeen left for Tasmania this evening. Lord Deerhurst, who reoently resigned tbe appointment of aide-de-camp to Sir H. Loch, has given notice that he will not appear in the appeal case Deerhurst v. Button. In consequence of this, Sutton's appeal will be allowed to-morrow. The Ministry have invited General Shaw, wbo is at present in New Zealand, to inspect tbe Victorian defences. April 5. Sailed—Wairarapa, for the Bluff. Sydney, April 4. It is understood that the PostmasterGeneral is favorable to a reduction being made in the New South Wales and Victorian lines on Press messages to and from New Zealand, so as to assimilate the charges of the three colonies interested, Tbe second of a series of three contests between the pedestrians Meyers and George took place on the Association ground to-day. The race was for 1500 yardß, and was won by Meyers by half a yard. Time, 3min. 46 2-sth sec. Efforts are being made to liberate Holt, the Bank manager, who was sentenced to five years' imprisonment for embezzlement. The ground for this movement is Holt's alleged insanity. Albany, April 5. The Shannon arrived this morning. Among the passengers is Dr Goe, Anglican Bishop of Melbourne. Messrs Millar and Hunter are tbe only New Zealand passengers.
