A serious accident occurred at Featherston on Thursday, which might have been attended with fatal results. MrCranrnor, of the Royal Hotel, was driving his trap from the station, and on crossing the railway by Hunter’s store, the 11 a.m, goods train came up and smashed the trap and rather seriously injured Mr Oranraer. The horse escaped with a few bruises.
On Thursday a child a year and nine months, old. son of Mr Kent, a guard on the Springfield Railway, was drowned in the Malvern water race, into which he fell while playing in a paddock near his father’s house.
On Wednesday evening the infant son of Mr A. Johnston, of Kaiapoi, drank sulphuric acid, which his father used for soldering. Two doctors were called in and performed tracheotomy to prevent suffocation. The child sank, however, y/1 died on Thursday. 0 ' The criminal calendar at Christchurch contains 17 charges against 21 prisoners. Frederick Elliot, a letter carrier at the New Plymouth Post Office, died suddenly on Thursday morning. He was formerly sergeant in the 37th regiment, and had been a letter carrier for ten years.
