COMMERCIAL.
CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE, The Corn Exchange reports for the week ending Friday evening, the Ist inst. : Grain is fast and steadily coming to hand, and had sacks been available when required, the chief part of the autumn threshing would have been complete. It is understood that the chief part of the Robert Sale shipment of sacks has alrsady been taken by consumers, so that there is little chance of sack ■ " ! -ig in value, especially in the face oi tnc neavy crop of potatoes. Shipments to neighboring colonies as well as to London are being steadily executed. The condition is much much improved since the opening of the season.
Wheat- The firm tone indicated last week is fully maintained. Tuscan, which is chiefly wanted for immediate shipment, commands top value of 3s 4ld to 3s sd, pearl and hunter’s, if prime, bring 3s 4d to 3s 4jd ; chicken wheat is scarce at 2s 9d to 2s 10.1 for clean broken, and up to 3s for whole wheat.
Oats Shipments to London having been completed for the time being, a slight fall has been experienced, but it is not anticipated that prices will recede more than temporarily. Quotations to-day are for short heavy feed Is 9d to Is 9|d, and long descriptions Is 7d to Is Bd. Barley Considerable shipments continue to Australia which makes malsters eager to do business, but the majority of are scarcely up to'prime quality. What few come up to the standard, readily command 3s 6d ; second quality, 3s to 3s 3d ; feed is scarce at 2s 6d.
Beans and Peas Very little business doing in either lines.
Ryegrass has very little business to note and values are unaltered. The same remark applies to cocksfoot. Potatoes—Enquiries are being made as to the probable opening prices. Buyers are not disposed to offer over 355, f.0.b., sacks included.
Dairy Produce—Prices remain firm at last week’s quotations, with a very quiet market.
The above quotations are for delivery, f.0.b,, Lyttelton (sicks included).
CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. AttheAdlingtonyards on Wednesday, large entries of all kinds of stock were again yarded. There was an average attendance of buyers and others. Fat Cattle—The demand proved fairly good, most lines being sold, prices remaining as about lately quoted. Lines of bullocks sold at from £5 5s to £6 12s 6d ; heifers from £3 17s 6d to £6 2» 6d ; and a few good fat cows sold up to £6 5s —the price per lOOtbs ranging from 15s to 18a 6d, according to the quality. The entry of store cattle was a fairly good one, hut the demand was poor. In the dairy stock market there was again a good entry of milch cows, a good demand still existing. Superior sorts sold at from £6 to £9 10s, and from £3 to £4 for medium sorts.
Sheep—A very large supply. Lines of crossbred wethers sold at from 8s to 8s 6d, lighter weights sold at from 6s 3d to 7s 6d ; crossbred ewes from 4s 6d to 7s, and merino wethers up to 3s 7d, being at from |d to per lb according to quality. There was again a large supply of store sheep. A great number being old ewes, fil only for boiling down, brought 2s to 3s 6d per iiead ; a nice eveu line of fourtooth wethers, in forward condition, fetched 5s 4d per head ; lines of four-tooth half bred ewes at 4s 6'J ; and a line of crossbred ewes, mixed ages, at 3s 6d. Fat Lambs—A fairly good number on offer, and a pretty good demand. Best lots sold at from 5s 3d to 7s 3d per head ; other lines, 3s to 4s Gd ; and good shorn lan/bs at 4s per head. A line of lambs sold at 3s 2d, and other lines of iambs at Is 6d and 2s 7d per head. Pigs—A large supp ! y ; demand pretty good. Porkers at from 16s to 25s and 36s for very heavy sorts; good strong stores at from 16.- 6d to 23s ; smaller lots, 5s to Bs.
Rims—A largo number offered, but next to no buyers presented themselves. A few sold at from 3s 4d to 1 guinea for stud purposes ; a good number sold at from 2s 6d to 5s for boiling down, but most were passed in.
DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the week ending Tuesday : Wheat —Deliveries are still limited, and to meet tire slight demand existing for shipment suitable parcels at reasonable quotations are not yet obtainable. Tuscan and velvet come to band in sufficient quantity for present local requirements, but of red and purple straw the market is rather bare, realising top prices. Quotations : For best milling, 3s 8d to 3s 9d, the latter figure only for choice lots; medium to good, 3s fid to 3h 7d ; inferior and fowls’ wheat, 2s 6d to 3s 3.1 (ex store). Oats—Considerable supplies are now on band and coming forward, but the demand is not brisk. A considerable business has been done during the week, but mostly at prices Id to l|d per bushel below last week’s quotations, with the exception of one lot of choice long tartarians for seed, which brought Is 9d. Present quotations are : For bright milling, Is 7£d to J 8 8d ; short bright feed, Is 7d to Is 7£d ; medium, Is fid to Is 7£ (ex store). . ’ ; Barley has a good demand and prices firming, but owing to the small supplies only a limited business is being done. Prime malting, 3s 3d to 3s 6d ; medium, 3s to 3s 3d; feed and milling, 2a 6d to 2s 9d (ex store). Grass Seed--Market quiet. Best ma-chine-dressed ryegrass seed, 3s 9d to 4j ; farmers’ samples, 2s 9d to 3s 3d ; cocksfoot, 4d per lb. Chaff—Best oaten sheaf, £2 15s ; medium, £2 10s to £2 12s fid. Potatoes—Demand good; supplies short. Prime Derwe.its, £2 12s fid to £2lss. , tt . Butter—Now seasons salt, or pr.me quality, 7d to 7|d J fresh, according to quality, fid to 9d. Eggs—la fid per doz.
Sheepskins—On Monday best lots of jrrt;ou crossbreds realised over last week’s p: ices. slippy, IJd to 2d ; light, to 2§d ; medium, 2fd to 3|d ; heavy and in prime condition, 3|d to 4£d per lb. Taliow—There is no improvement in values to report, but late rates remain firm and the market ia bare. (Rotations are : For inferior and mixed, 10s to 12s; medium, 13s to 15s ; good to beat rendered routtoa, 16s to 20s ; rough fat —inferior, 6s to 7s ; medium, 8s to 9s; good to best, 10a to 12s per cwt.
DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS. At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday the following business was transacted : Fat Cattle —137 were yarded, only a very few being good quality. There was no improvement in the demand, arid prices were if anything a shade lower than those of last week. Best bullocks brought £6 to £8 10s; light and medium quality, £3 2s 6d to £5 15s ; and cows in proportion.—Mr L. Maclean sold for the executors of the late Mr M. Studholme (Waimate Estate), 7 bu'locks from £6 15 3 .o £7 15s. Wlight, Stephenson a id Ce. sold for Mr M. Quinn (Temuka), 6 bullocks at from £7 10a to £B.
Fat Sheep—36l7 were penned, consisting chiefly of cro«sbred», mostly ewes, only a few pens wethers, the latter being of good to prime quality, while the former comprised all quaiit os. Prices were slightly lower than last week. Best crossbred wethers brought from 7s 6d to 83 6d ; medium, 5s 6d to 7s 3d ; best do ewes, 5s 6d to 7s 6d ; ordinary, 4s 6d to 5s 3d.—Mr L, Maclean sold for the executors of the late Mr M. Studholme (Waiunle Estate), 132 crossbred wethers at 6s 91 to 7s.—Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. sold for Mr John Douglas (Waihoa Downs), 192 crossbred ewes at 53 fid ; for Mr F, M. Rickman 80 Shropshire Down ewes at 9s. Fat Lambs—sl7 were yarded. Bidding was brisk, and prices ware a allude better. Prices ranged from 4s to 7s 3d. Pigs —349 were penned. Competition for suckers and bacon pigs was dull, but porkers were in fair demand. Suckers brought from 3s 91 to 7s ; stores, fis 9d to 8s fid ; grown do, 15s 6 I to 21 s fid ; porkers, 22s to 25s ; baconers, 39s to 445. —Mr L. Maclean sold for Messrs Bourn and M’Donald (VVashdyke), 28 at 29s to 325.
Horses— Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. note a fair demand for good useful draughts and strong upstanding lightharness horses for shipment. ENGLISH MARKETS,

The list of woo’ ships whose cargo will be sold during the present series is now closed. The total quantity is 2000 bales short of the number fixed.

Adelaide wheat is 375, ana Adelaide flour 265. Neve Zealand wheat, lowest qualities, 33s ; best quality, 37s 6d. Australian beef tallo w is 23s 6d ; mutton tallow, 28s. The wool market continues firm, At to-day’a sales 10,300 bales were catalogued.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) have received the following cablegram from London, dated 29th March, 18«7 :
Wool—The market is slightly steadier since the opening of the sales. It is firmer for coarse crossbred, and easier for faulty hiinbs’ wool. The Continental demand good, but the Home trade are purchasing sparingly, excepting crossbred, Lp to dare it is estimi f fid that 274,000 bales have arrived ; 52,000 bales have been sold.
Wheat —New Zealand wheat (ordinary), to arrive iron ship, is worth, c.'.f., 36s 6d per 4801bs, May bill of lading. Victorian, to arrive iron ship, is worth, c.i.f., 34s 6d per 4801bs, March bill of lading. Victorian is worth 36s 6d ; New Zealand average, 36s ; and New Zealand long berried, 36s 6d per 4961 b.
Tallow and leather--Markets are unchanged. Frozen meat Market quiet. Canterbury mutton and lamb are worth respectively 4|d and 6d per lb.
