THE N.S.W. BUDGET.

Sydney, March 30. In the Legislative Assembly to-night, the Colonial Treasurer delivered his Budget statement to a crowded attendance. He announced that the Customs Act of last session would be repealed, and a new tariff be introduced, which would bo limited to twenty-four artie'es, selected for revenue purposes, and would consist of ad valorem duties only. All other duties would expire on September 30tb. The new duties moved include a higher rate on spirits, and Excise duty on colonial ales. The estimates of expenditure show a reduction of £450,000 ou the appropriations for 1886. The Treasurer estimates the improved revenue to yield by the end of the year a surplus of £BOO,OOO. The deficit left by the previous Government, which hai been ascertained to be over £3,600,000, tiie Colonial Treasurer proposes to separate from the current transactions of the country and pay off by savings within eight years. No other measure fur new taxation is proposed, and no fresh loan will be issued this year. The Statement was well received, March 31. By the Treasurer’s Budget proposals, the duty on spirits will be raised to 14s, and colonial beer will be subject to an excise of 4d per gallon, and an increase of 3d will he made on the duty on tobacco. The proposals are generally well received.
