At Auckland oa Wednesday a petition praying * that' the election of Mr Geo. Harper as a member of the City South Licensing Committee might be declared void, on the ground of impersonation at the /election, was considered by ' the Resident Magistrate who dismissed it on the ground that the petitioners Mere not properly before the Court. A man named Martin, a draper, who was employed at Thompson, Shannon, and Co., is reported to the police as missing. He left his lodging on Tuesday morning and Has not been seen since. He is a married man and has a wife and two children mWellington. James O'Sfiea, a Wellington merchant, appeared at the Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday to answer a summons (not on information as formerly elated) charging him with : obtaining two promissory notes, £76 17s 6d, from David Robertson, ef the Phoenix Foundry, under false pretences. The case was remanded for a week. Bail was allowed, accused himself in £IOO. A man named James Grogan died suddenly at Dunedin on Wednesday. He went into a hotel, culled for a glass of wine, and while in tbe act of raising it to bis lips he dropped down dead. He had been partially paralysed for years, the result of aa accident.

The Government have been compelled to reject the insulators made in Canterbury, as on analygii they were found to contain iron and manganese, which would seriously interfere with insulation. The particulars of the case are : The prisoner, who is a married woman, formerly residing near Dunedin, came to Oamarn last year and gave birth to a child. The child, which was in delicite health, disappeared suddenly and the accused gave out that it had been taken away by a woman residing at East Taieri. Aftsr the prisoner left Oamaru the mutilated body of a child was found buried in the yard of the house where she resided, and she was subsequently arrested on the capital charge. On Thursday the case was was concluded. The doctors could not agree as to the cause of death, but the doctor who attended the child four or five days before its disappearance B»id in bis evidence that it could not have lived, as it w»s dying when he saw it. The plea set up was that the child died a natural death, and that the mother had buried it is the yard, the mutilation being caused by the spade in burial. A verdiot of not guilty was returned.
