COMMERCIAL.
CHRISTOHUROH CORN EXCHANGE. The Corn Exchange reports for the week onding Friday evening, the 18th inst. : There ie no improvement to note in the grain markets. Shipping orders are not plentiful, and storage in Lyttelton is beaming limited. The condition has much improved, but still rejections are very gommon. The best conditioned , Tuscan is being chiefly taken up for shipment to London, bin v't varieties are being held in store or uk«u into our local mills. Wheat—Tuscan maintains its premier position by fully a penny per bushel, rates for prime being 3s 4d to 3s ,4£d; pearl and hunter's, 3s 3Ad; second quality is not in favor, many lines are bring taken up for chicken wheat at prices varying from 2s 9d to 3s ; broken wheat sells at 25,6 dto2s 8J with little offering. , Oats—This market has been fairly busy. Considerable sales of heavy short feed have been taken up on the basis of Is 9d f.o'.b. for shipment/to London, Sydney, and the North Island. The orders, how-, ever, are now pretty well completed, so we may expect a lull for a week or so. Milling lines are scarce, and are worth Is 10d for bright, clean, heavy Canadians. The long descriptions are mostly taken for local consumption at Is 6d to Is Bd. Beans have but little enquiry. Peas—Prussian blues are' offering at 3s 3d, bat buyers are not anxious to speculate in the absence of orders. Feed kinds are worth 2s 7d to 2s TOd for local purposes. , , , , Grass Seed—This market is exceedingly' weak. Orders to .hand have been all executed, and holders are not anxious to add to,their present s'tqeks., Prjipea remain at 2s 3d to 3s for farmers'- ',par,c;9Js. Cocksfoot is dull, s£d being the, best price, except for machine-dressed, which is quoted at 3|d to id. , .... Dairy Produce—This market sliows no improvement. Butter is being quitted, at sdto 6d, in srnall |( lots. Chaese has no outside demand, and prices are nominal at4dto 6d. /' ~ The above, prices are those paid to farmers, and delivered f.o.b. Lyttelton, sacks extra.
OHRISTOHUEOH STOCK MARKETS.
\ ?At the Addington yards on Wednesday, large entries of stock, both fat and store, were sent forward.. Cattle— The number of fat cattle was larger than for some past. Principally light weights were offering; the demand was very good, sufficient to make almost as entire clearance at about lace values, riz., 16s to 18s 6d per 1001 k, as the quality varied. Steers sold at from £6 to £6 ss; heifers and fat cows from £3 15s to £7. In the store cattle market (he demand was rather slack. The niurber of dairy cows yarded was again large, »nd competition was keen for any good promising looking calvera, values ranging from £5 15s to £7 10a for such. Sheep—Prime crossbred wethers sold nt from 8s to 10s, light-weight wethers from 6s to 7s 6d, ewes from 4s 3d to 6s lOi, merino wethers up to 4s, being from f d per lb for fat ewes up to lfd per lb for the primest mutton. A large entry of store Bheep were yarded, a large proportion being aged ewes, both merioo and' crossbred, and selling at from Is to 3s per head for boiling down. Young crossbred ewes met with a better inquiry than of late. Various lines of such sold at from 4s 6d to 6s Id for breeding purposes, and a line of 4-tooth crossbred wethers in forward condition fetched 6s 9d. Lambs —For the bent as high as 7s per head was paid; 4s 6d to 5s 9d for medium sorts. A heavy entry of pigs was again yarded. Demand showed signs of falling off, and values give way from 2s to 3s par head. Porkers sold at from 16s to 29a; good ctrong stores from 15s to 25s ; small stores, 5s to 8a 6d.
DTJNEDIN PRODUCE MARKERS. The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday : Wheat—Deliveries during the 'past week have not been beyond millers' requirements, and consequently values remain firm at late quotations. Millera ara not prepared to buy to any extent at present prices. Fowl wheat (for which advanced rates are being paid) is tcsrce. Quotations:- -Prime milling, 3a 8d to 3s 9dj; medium, 3s 6d to 3s 7£d ; fowl wheat, 3s to 3s 5:1. Oits—During the past week an active demand has been eperienced, in fact buyers have barely been able to supply requirements. Best milling is worth Is Bnd to la 9d ; bright feed, Is 8d to Is 9d ; medium, Is 6d to Is 7£d. Barley—Market quiet, malsters still awaiting consignments of new crop. Best quality malting, 3s to 3s 2d ; medium, 2s JM to 2h lid, bags extra. Chaff—Best feed, £2 17s 6d ; medium, £2 10s to £2lss. Potatoes—Best Derwents, £2 7s 6d to £2 10a. Market fairly supplied. Grass Seed —Demand limited. Machinedressed off old pasture, 3* 9d to 4s 3d; farmers' samples, according to quality, 2s 9d to 3* 3d. Butter—Prime keg is wanted at 7d to 7£d ; prime fresh, 8&d. Cheese—Demand slight at 4£d. Eggs—Prices have risen to Is 4d per dozen, with a fair demand. Sheepskins—On Monday green crossbreds brought Is 5d to 2s sd; green merinos, Is 3d to L ls. 7d; lambskins, Is 9d to 2s 6d ; dry crossbrods, Is Id to 3s 9d ;do merinos, Is 2d to 3s 7d; pelts, Id to 6d. Hides—Quotations are ; For heavy weights, 4d to 4£d {medium, 3£d to 3|d; light, 2fd to 3d per lb, if free from cuts and offal. Tallow— Quotations are : For best mutton, 16s 6d to 20s ; medium, 13s to 15a 6d; inferior and mixed, 10s to 12s 6d ; rough fat—best mutton, 10s to lis ; inferior to medium, da to 9d.
DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS. At the Burnside Yards ou Wednesday the following business was trans* acted : Fat Cattle—l 72 head were yarded, half of which were inferior and medium, competition throughout was dull, prices obtained being below even last week's reduced rates. Best bullocks, £6 5s to £8; others, £3 to £6; cows and heifers, £2 2s Cd to £5 15s.
Fat Sheep—3442 penned, and with the exception of. about 150 merinos (medium quality) and a few pens wethers, were crossbred ewes ranging from medium to heayy weights. Prices ruled lower than last week. Best crossbred wethers 6s to 7s'3d; others, 5s to 5s 9d ; best do ewes, 5h 91 to 7s 3d ; others, 3a 6d to 6b; merinos, 3s 3d to 4s 3d.—L. Maclean sold for the executors of the Mi- M. Stndholme (Waimate estate), 70 crossbred ewts from 5s 6d to 6s, and 84 merinos at 3s 3d.— Wright, Stephenson and Co. sold for Mr John Douglas (Waihao Downs) 180 crossbred ewes at ss; for Mr Wm. Simmons (Makikihi) 64 haJfbreds at 5s 9d. Fat Lambs—927 were penned. The quality ranged from mediurr- quality to prime heavy weights. Nearly all were disposed of at prices ranging from 3s 3d to 6s 3d.
Figs sorts. There was a fair demand, prices being equal to late rates. Suckers brought 6s to 13s 6d ; slips, lis to 14a Gd ; stores, 17d 6s to 24s ; porkers, 21s 6d to 27b 6d ; baceners, 30s to 455. L. Maclean sold for Messrs Bourn and M'Dosald (Wasbdyke), 26 at from 32s to 555.
Horses —Wright, Stephenson and Co. quote first-class heavy draughts, £lB to £22 ; medium, £l2 to £lB ; first-class hacks and light harnes horses, £lB to £25 ; medium, £8 to £l4; light and weedy, £1 10s to £5.
AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Melbourne, March 16. The Melbourne Manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, Limited, of New Zealand reports on the local grain market as follows : Wheat, 38 lid to 4s per bushel. No material change ; if anything, weaker. Barley, 4s to 4s 6d' per bushel. More demand, at slightly improved prices. New Zealand oats—- Peed sorts, 2s 9d to 2s lid per bushel, To effect isles lower prices must'be accepted. Milling Borts, 2e lid to 3s per bushel, quieter and weaker; under bond, 2s Id to 2s 2d per bushel, slow sales, Ryegrass, 3s 9d to 4s per bushel, depressed. ENGLISH MARKETS. London, March 14. Colonial breadstuffs—Adelaide wheat, ex store, 37s ; New Zealand wheat, 33s to 37s 6d ; Adelaide flour, 265. Tallow—Australian average qaolity : Beef, 24s 6d ; mutton, 295. The New Zealand Laanaid Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) have receifed the following cablegram from London, dated 15th March, 1887 : Wheat—Market weak, and is likely to go lower. Adelaide wheat (new) is worth 378, and Victorian 37s 6d per 4961b5. Quotations for New Zealand wheat are unchanged, owing to the absence of supplies of this description. Victorian wheat to arrive per iron ship is worth, c.i.f., 35s 6d per 4801bs, March bill of lading.
