TEMUKA RIFLE VOLUNTEERS.

The annual meeting of the Temuka Biftea tookplaoeon Monday evening last, about 40 members being present. Captain Hayhurst occupied the ohair. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed.

The Secretary read the balanoo-sheet, whioh showed the total receipts for the past j ear, including the balance brought forward from last year, to be £226 16i 7d, and the expenditure £14216a 2d, leafing a credit balanoe of £B4 Oi sd. On the motion of Private Beri, seconded by Sergeant Smith, the balance-sheet wai paned as read. Some discussion took place on the matter of disponing of the capitation. Private A. Olinoh thought it should be placed to the credit of the general funds of the company, and that the members should be provided with uniforms by the oompany. It was pointed out by Color-Sergeant Ooira that rule 9, which had been passed by the oompany, provided that each.' member should supply his own full'dress uniform. Captain Hayhurst hoped that the members would agree to leave the capitation to the oredit of the company's funds, as there were a lot of works to be carried out, such as putting a floor in the drillshed and repairing the rifle butts. It was proposed by Private A. Clinoh, seconded by Private Berl—" That the capitation for 1886 be placed to the oredit of the company's fends." Proposed by Corporal Levens as an amendment, and seconded by Private Carr—" That 20j be paii over to the members who had qualified for it, and the balance of 10s per man be placed to the funds." The Secretary hoped that Corporal Levens' amendment would not be carried, as it would be a great benefit to the company if the money was left in, and he was quite sure that none of the members would miis

it. Lieutenant Findlay stated he had been waiting for the matter to oome up. He agreed with what the captain had said at the last annual meeting, viz., that there were a number of members who had joined only to wear the zed coat and get the capitation. He thought that if it was worth being a volunteer at all it was only right they should be prepared to take a little trouble, and not expect payment. He was very glad to hear Corporal Levans mention that he only proposed the amendment na a feeler, and, in conclusion, he hoped the resolution would be carried. After some further disoussion, the oaptain put the amendment, when 13 voted for it. On the resolution being put 14 held up their hands. The resolution was, therefore, declared carried. Several of the members did not vote either way. [Sergeant Guy here retired.] Oaptain Hayhurat said that no doubt most of the members bad heard of Sergeant Guy's success at the JjTew Zealand Eifle Association's meeting in Ohristohuroh. He said i that, although Sergeant Guy did sot win the

ci.tui pi'm b-U, he bad done remarkably well, find * s the only Canterbury volunteer who had fired in the laefc 20 for the belt. He thought; the company should show him some recognition, and present Bergeant Guy with a trophy, Hn would, however, be glad to hesr tome other members express them* selves on the matter.

After iome diiousiion, it was decided on the motion of Oolor*Sergeant Ooira, aecotded by Private Harte—" That a Martini-Henry R fle be prooured by the oorps and presented to Sergeant Guy." Sergeant Guy wai then called in, and Captain Hayhurst informed him of the company '• deoiiion. Sergeant Guy expressed his thanki to the officers and members in an exceedingly appropriate little speech. Be the concert in aid of the High Sohool Cadets' uniforms, it was deoided that the usual charge for hire of hall be adhered to, and that £1 be voted by the oorps as a donation towards the funds of the Oadets.

Captain Hayhurst said he had one other matter to bring forward, viz., the sale of the piano. This matter was well disoussed, and'it was decided to sell the instrument the first opportunity. The following members were elected a managing Committee for the ensuing year : L»noe<Oorporal Heap, Privates fieri, Harte, Coltman, and A. Clinch. Lieut. Findlay was re-eleoted Treasurer and Corporal Mason Secretary. A vote of tbanks was passed to the outgoing Committee for servioes. Lieutenant Findlay said he understood it was intended the oompany should go into camp again this y«ar before going to the Eatter Beview, and he hoped as many would attend as possible, as it would break them in to their work.

Corporal Levens thought that perhaps it would also be as well for the caterer to break them in to the " Oamaru stew." (Laughter.) On the motion of Corporal Mason, seconded by Corporal Hobbs, a vote of thanks was passed to Lieutenant Findlay for his past servioes. Lieutenant Findlay proposed a vote of thanks to Captain Hayhurst for the great interest he had taken in all matters connected with the welfare of the oorps, and said it was greatly due to him that the ereotion of the new drillshed had been undertaken.. It had turned out a great success, the public having most liberally assisted. The vote of thanks was carried with muiioal honors, and, Captain Hayhurst having suitably replied, the meeting terminated.
