ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, March 8. The firm ot William Watson and Sons, Australian merchants, has been converted into a Limited Liability Company, with a capital of £IOO,OOO, but none of the shares will be offered to the public. A sum of £30,000 has been proposed as a part of a vote of £IIO,OOO to Captain Brennan for his torpedo rights. The efforts recently made by prominent members of the Liberal Party to heal the breach caused by the division of opinion on the Irish question have been revived, with some prospect of success. Communications have passed between the chiefs of the various sections

into which the parly is split, and show that a reunion of the fragments is not far distant.

Th e death is announced of the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, aged 75. He had b-en auing since Saturday, when he had a severe apoplectic attack.

Mr E. Stanhope states that the Government are in honor bound to provide the armaments promised tor the colonial forts.

A Church Colonising Society is announced, with a capital of a quarter of a million. The objects .of the Society are to assist emigrants, Hanlan rows Beach on November 26th, and will sail for Australia, via San Francisco on August 6th.

The chief draughisman of Chatham Dockyard has been dismissed for having sold designs to the American Government.

The Marquis of Lothian has been appointed to succeed Mr Arthur Balfour as Secretary for Scotland.

In the House of Commons last night, the essential points of the “ cloture ” rules were passed.

Mr Bowman, the Exhibition expert, states that the Adelaide wool at the Indian and Colonial Exhibition was most tastefully and effectively arranged j and praises the mode) sheep exhibits. The New Zealand wool was first-class, and the classification of it most scientific. The Victorian exhibits were splendid, the fineness, length of staple, softness, and lustre causing it to occupy first place in the Exhibition. The New South Wales collection was of a very high class. The standard of Queensland wools was generally very good, some samples being of exceptional beauty. Archbishop Oroke, in a letter he has written, disavows the sentiments attributed to him. He states that ha proposed nothing and recommended nothing, but simply expressed an opinion on the value of the no-tax and no-rent manifesto issued by the leaguers. It never entered bis head, he says, to recommend a general rising against payment of taxes. He puts bis trust in constitutional agitation ; alone, believing that the national rights of the Irish people can be restored under existing conditions.

The dispute between the English Postmaster-General and the Cunard and While Star lines, respectively, as to the carriage of mails across the Atlantic is settled.

Jen thousand pounds have been presented to Mr Schuahorst of Birmingham in recognition of his efforts on behalf of Liberalism in England.

Intelligence is to hand from Zanzibar that, through the mediation of the German officials, the hostilities which were proceeding between the Portuguese at Mozambique and the Zanzibarians have been slopped, and an amicable settlement df the difficulty is expected.
