GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Council was held on Wednesday. Present— Messrs John Talbot (Chairman), Moore, Mackay, Balfour, Moody, and Barker. A letter was read from the Treasury asking in what sum o r sums the Council ‘ required the loan advanced for irrigation purposes. They also asked for information about the striking of a special rate.Resolved- That a special meeting of the Council be held on Wednesday, April 13th, at 11 a.ra. for the purpose of making a special order striking a rate of 3-sths of a penny in the £ on ail rateable property in the Rnngitata and Orari Plains Water Supply District, such rate being for the purpose of providing interest on a loan of £2500 borrowed from the Government under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886, fer the purpose of carrying out irrigation works in the said district.”
Proposed by Mr Mackay and carried—- “ That the attention of the Road Boards and Town Boards be drawn to the Council’s intention to strike a rate to wipe out existing debt, and to carry on necessary works for another year, and that the Council previous to striking a rate for the year 1887-88, suggests that this course be done by each Board when striking its cwn rate, and thus save a very considerable sum to the ratepayers in collection, issuing notices, etc. The rate proposed to be made is in the £ and the power referred to is contained in the Rating Act, 1885, clause 6, and following.” A letter was read from Mr C. H. Verity calling the Council’s attention to the rather dangerous state of .the approach to the Opihi bridge from the Raincliffi side. —Mr Mackay was authorised to have a few panels of fencing put on each side of the bridge at once. 1 Mr Walter M. Moere was appointed one> of the members to represent the Council on the South Canterbury Hospitals and Charitable Aid Board, vice Mr Postle* thwaite resigned*
A letter was read from the Public Works office, in reply to one sent by the Council, stating that the Minister of Public Works was advised that be had no power to vest the control of the erection of an entirely new bridge (the South Opuha bridge), at a place where no bridge previously existed, in the Council. The question of licensing coach proprietors and others was then taken, but it was held over for further consideration.
A petition from a majority of the ratepayers in the Seado-vn district was read, praying that the Water Supply Scheme should be again proceeded with, and it was reserved—“ That the Seadown Water Supply Scheme be again gone on with, and the necessary steps taken as anon as possible ” ; and “ that a loan of £2500 be raised for the parpose of constructing and carrying out tho works, anc that the Chairman be authorised to take the necessary steps in the matter.” Accounts to the amount of £ll2 6? 5 and subsidies to the amount of £540. were passed, and the meeting terminated.
