S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

A meeting of the Sooth Canterbury Board of Education was held on Thursday. Present—Messrs S. W. Goldsmith (Chairman), John Talbot, W. B. Howell, Dr Foster, and the Rove. G. Barclay and Jasper Smythe. The following business concerning this district was transacted by th« Board : In the architect's report it was stated that the contracts for the building at Kakabn Bush would be puc in hand at once, «nd that the Hon. Mr Wigley bad offered to enlarge the site of the school. It was resolved, on the motion of the Rev. Mr Barclay, seconded by Mr Talbot—- " That the Board receive with satisfaction the offer of the Hon. Mr Wigley to increase gratuitously the school site at Kakahu Bash, and that Mr Barclay on the part of the Board be requested to interview Mr Wigley." The Inspector's special report and general reports on the examination of the Hilton, South Orari, Orari Bridge, Scotsburn, Mi'ford, Temnlcn, South Rangitata, Rangitata, Gapes' Valley, Pleasant Valley, and Woodbury schools, were read, and were ordered to be forwarded to the Committees at once ; when necessary, attention to be drawn to parts of the reports. On the motion of the Rev. Mr Barolay, seconded by the Rev. Mr Smythe, it wbb resolved—" That the following persons, Miss Back, Mesdumes Ermet, Nelson, Worthington, and Mr Greenfield, be asked to submit what explanation tbey caa offer for their non-appearance at the late examination of teachers in December," Mr Barclay said that uncertificated teachers had all received notice last year that they must present themselves for examination, failing which their positions- would be forfeited. To avoid this result, if possible, h« proposed the above resolution.

The votiog for members of the Board showed that the Rev. Jasper Smythe, and Meßsrs Barker and Howell had been Reelected to their position. Correspondence was" read— From the Educational Institute of South Canterbury, with respect to the granting of bonuses to teacheis.—Referred to a Committee.

From the Pleasant Point, Geraldine, and other School Committees forwarding explanations of the Inspector's reports on the Bohools named.—Accepted as satisfactory. From the Secretary of the S.C. Caledonian Society, renewing their gift of another scholarship of the value of £l2 12s open to pupils attending other tLan High Schools in the South Canterbury Education district, Accepted with thanks.

From Mr Qoldstone stating that he had been compelled to remove his boy from the Timarn High School, and asking the Board to allow him to go to the Temuka High School. -On the motion of the liev. Mr Barclay, seconded by the Rev. Mr Sruythe, it was resolved—" That Mr Goldstone be requested to state to the Board what are the reasons for the compulsion which he refers to; and that in the meantime the boy be allowed to take his education at the Temuka District High School.?'

Mr W. B. Howell was appoipted the Board's representative on tbe Reserves Commission.

It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Howell, that tenders be called for the Totara Valley School, and that they be forwarded to Mr Shaw (Chairman of Committee) for acceptance. ; Tlie meeting then terminated.
