FIRE AT AUCKLAND.
Auckland, February 28. At 7.30 lasf night a fire broke out in Sos3ex street, Eden terrace, and before it was checked caused damage to the extent of £2500, six dwelling houses being destroyed, The fire began at the residence of Patrick Brady, in the centre of the blook, Bnd spread both ways. Baing beyond the city boundary and having no water supply the flames could not be checked except by the efforts of the Salvage Corps, under Captain Field. The o'igm of the fire is unknown. Houses destroyed were occupied and insured as follows: Brady, £l6O, Colonial; Johnston, £2OO, Colonial , Evans, £l5O, South British ; Shepherd, £IOO, South British j Captain Nicholas, £175, New Zealand; Baylls, insured by Building Society, Company not known. Risks on furniture destroyed were held by the South British, £4O; Colonial, £f,o; New Zealand £IOO. Attwood's house, partly destroyed, was insured for £2OO in the New Zealand. While work\n<r at Attwood's house to srrest the firs at°tbat point Captain Field got severely scorched about the face; Mr Crowther also suffered similarly while driving the Salvage Corps brake down to the scene of the fire. The street was so narrow that on turning the cor-ner into Sussex street ho had to run the gauntlet pasta row of burning houses, and to add to the trouble some people had put their things out on the roadway, so there was no help for it but to drive smash through household goods, Mr Crowther getting scorched abou() th« face, and the off horse was scorched so badly that he had to take it out of the break and gbl a fresh horse from town.

The total number of competitors if ab.ul 300, and half of these are in cuuip. Ttie remainder are billeted about town. The Hinemoa, with 128 competitors, comprising the Auckland, Wellington, Wanganui, Turanaki, Thames, Marlborough,l unci Napier men arrived at Lytteltonafc6.4s p.m. on Saturday, and most of the Southern contingent arrived ty express train the same evening. The last of the Volunteers came through by speoial train this morning. The weather yesterday and to-dny was wet, and has made things unpleasant in camp. Twenty target* will be in use, but it in not expected that the championships will be decided before Monday week. There is no telegraphic communication with the ranee. Feb. 28. The weather is fine, bnt dull. Colonel Mahon has resigned from the Council, and takes command of the camp. The men in the camp speak highly of the catering.
