The English Government prefer the route via Zanzibar for the expedition to Emir .Rev's assistance,. but Mr H, M. Stanley insists on the Congo route. The P. and 0. s.s. Shannon has arrived at Plymouth. ~ , Jan- 31.. Mr Stanley denies that there is any difference between him and the Egyptian Government as to the route of bis expedition, and laughs at the story of Emir Bey's escape as nonsense, > The Morning Post suggests that; the Imperial Conference should discuss the general organisation of the forces of the Empire, and the development of postal and .telegraphic communication between British speaking communities. ■ Serious rioting took place at Belfast on Saturday and - Sunday last. The mob stoned, the .police, shots were j exchanged, and the police charged with the , bayonet. Forty of the rioters were arrested. Rio db Janeiro, Jan. 31. The ship Kapunda, 1095 tons, bound from London to Western Australia, collided at sea with some vessel; unknown. The Kapunda 6unk, » 360 of her crew and passengers were drowned. Calcutta, Jan. 31. News has been received from Afghanistan that the Dureati tribes, incited by the Governor of Candabar, attacked the British station at Kalabdula, near Khorak Pass. In the conflict the Khan of Kalabdula and 100 coolies were killed. The insurgents, afterwards destroyed the telegraph wires, AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Melbourne, Jan. 31. The. Parramatta arrived here this morning. Feb. 1. An order has been n ceived inj Melbourne for IOOjOOOIbs of tinned beef. The order has been placed in Rockhampton. ■ , Sydney, Feb. 1. ,The Wakatipu sailed this afternoon. The Illawarra miners, who for some time have been out on strike, have now resumed work.
