GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held on Tuesday at the Board’s office. Present—Messrs; &',R. R. H. Poatlethwaite,j. Itelland, and Grant. An apology for non-attendance was read from the Chairman, Mr W, U. Slack. In the absence of the Chairman) Mr Platman was voted to the chair. ' MINUTES. '• . The minutes of the'previous meeting were read and confirmed. TENDERS. . -T* The following tenders were then opened and dealt with Contract No. 207— Shingling Donkin’s Road, Wailii Bush—A. Reid, £176 5s ; 5. Mulvahill, £169 15s; T. Martin, £160; J. Webb, £154; R. O’Neil, £141; f G. Hammond, £132 3s 9d t (accepted)*
COBBESPON DENCE. The following correspondence was read arid dealt with : From Mr R. Rae, enclosing orders, and asking the Board to pay the sum of £lO to Mr J, Heney, and £4 10s to Mr J. Mundell, and deduct the sums from money owing to him. Mr Heney’a order was dated Dec. 16th, and Mr Mundell's Dec. 20th. —After a long discussion it was decided to pay the order for Mr Heney, and to mark the other to the .effect that sufficient funds had not accrued on the contract to meet it. From Mr Sullivan, stating that he had not been able to clear the gcrae from the road fronting his land on account of the dry weather, and asking for an extension of time.—lt wan decided not to entertain the application, as the work should have been finished long ago. From the Hon. T. Wigley, asking that the burnt manuka bo cleared away from Sullivan’s road, ns it broke the legs of his sheep when driven along the road.—L was decided to inform Mr Wigley that the Board would have the manuka burnt as soon an M ' v eatber permitted of it. From M Rae, asking for an extension of Ume ii Ins contract. —It waa decided te allow a fortnight’s extension, the applicant to be informed that no further . extension would be granted. . From Mr A. Reid, asking for an extension- of time en his contract, Boundary road.—lt was decided to grant an exten- ' sion of fourteen days, the applicant to be Informed that the work must be completed within that time. - r The Ranger’s report for the month, ' giving the number of cattle found wandering upon the roads, was read. From Mr J. Webb, asking for an axtension of time on bis contract, Hawke’s road, Rangitata.—Granted. From the Property Tax Department; Wellington, informing the Board that the tsnm of £lB7 10s, an advance of 75 per cent on account of subsidy due to the Board ander the Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act, had been paid into the Treasury, From Messrs Miles and Co # , trustees for Messrs Rhodes, disclaiming their liability for rates on sections Nos. 3610 . and. 3606. From Mr J. H. Baker, Chief Surveyor, Christchurch, stating that he had reserved the road line marked red on the enclosed tracing, and stating that the same would be surveyed at an early date. ■ v From Mr F. Brown, junr., Belfield, requesting the Board to have the main drains at Belfield opened up, and ths ford closed, as it waa unfit for traffic. Mr Brown enclosed a letter which he bad received from the Crown Land Office, etsting that the Geraldine Board bad never been prevented from doing work in the Belfield district; and also stating that; the Board bad already a sum of £407 15a on account of land sales, and wou’d re- ■ ' chive a further sum for one-third accruing on account of deferred payment lands since Nov,, 1885.—The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Brown and explain. From Mr G. Clarke, Kakahu Busb, requesting the Board to make a road from the main road to bis section No. 7241, Kakahu Bush, an he had no outlet at ' present.—lt was decided to make a good truck to Mr Clarke’s land. ' ROAD DEVIATION. An agreement between the Board and Mr A. Macdonald, whereby the latter agreed to sell to the Board, for the sum of £6 per acre, a small portion of R.S. Nos. 21423 and 29666, situated on the north side of the Raukapuka Downs, and adjoining the road known as Rae’a road, was laid upon the table. SMAIi BIRDS 1 NUISANCE. Mr Coltman reported that be had purchased 1321 dozen eggs, and 259$ dozen birds, at a costs of £l4 5s osd, making a total for the season of 2026 dozen eggs, and 326$ dozen eggs, at a cost of £2O 19s 3sd. Mr Flalinan said be thought it was a ; great pity that the collection and destruction of small birds and eggs was not compulsory on all Boards. Ihf* other members thought so too. OVERSEER'S report. . The Overseer’s report was then read as follows: >: “The Chairman Geraldine Road Board. gir f _l have the honor to report for the information of the Board as under. With one or two exceptions the works in band have made fair progress since Inst Board meeting. The time has expired on four . of-the contracts, bat two of them are just on the point of completion. “The following have been completed and passed for final payment, via.—No. .192, bridge near Scobie’s; No. 198, ’ DeOcon a road, Rangitata; No. 199, Raid’s !; crossing, Waihi Road ; No. 202, improving Valley cuttings. “Denoon’s Road. Rangitata—This road - would require to be shingled before the ‘ ; winter sets in. Shingle for a portion of : the road could be obtained from Messrs Taylor and Flatman's Isod, “ Kakahu and Opuha Road.—As there are no reserves on this line of road, 1 obtained permission from Mr Clarke to ' obtain rock for road metal from his land. ■ “ Road deviation, Rae’s Road.—l have prepared a detailed estimate showing the cost ot a new line of road, also cost of placing the old road in a state of good repair. “Bates.—l have received on account of general rate tha sum of £947 8s 3d to date. 1 have prepared a list showing the amount still outstanding. “Bents. I have great difficulty in getting in the rents for two of the Board’s '. cottages. The other two tenants pay very regularly. “ Transfer of contract,—Mr B. Bennett wishes to transfer his contract on Fiskey’s road to Maurice Lawlor. I have the honor to be, etc., “W. Shirks, v “ Overseer to Board. 1 Se Denoon'sßoad. It was decided to obtain an offer from Moists Taylor and Flatman. Road iwviat r OQ, Rae’s Road. decided to let the matter stand over till next meeting. Mr Burnett’s application was granted. UNPAID RATES. A list of persona whose rates Lave not been paid waa placed upon the table. It was decided that summonses be taken out against Hugh McLellan and Thomas McAteer, defaulting ratepayers. DEPUTATIONS AND INTERVIEWS. Messrs Lawrenson, Barney and Tarbotton waited upon the Board and asked to have removed from ihe side of the road the stones which had been placed there by the contractor when the road was formed. They wished them removed in order that they might .grub the gone.—
f It was decided to f clear the worst portions of the district first and theirs would come in their turn. Mr A. Macdonald waited upon the Board and asked them to improve Burnett’s cutting on the Kakahu Downs, on the road leading over into Beautiful Valley.—The Board decided to do the work. Mr J. Rowe waited upon the Board with reference to his occupation of one of the immigration cottages.—lt was decided to give both tenants three months’ notice and at the end of the time to call for tenders for renting the cottages. Mr D. Guthrie waited upon the Board to have R, Meredith’s name substituted for his on the rate roll. —Agreed to. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £342 4s Id ware passed for payment and the Board adjourned till Feb. Bth. TEMUKA RO tD BOARD. The monthly mecaug of the above Board was held last Tuesday. Present— Messrs Talbot (Chairman), Bisset, Hayburst, Quinn, and C»navan. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and. confirmed. ACCOUNTS, Accounts to the amount of £47 Us 3d •vere passed for payment. FINANCE. The Chairman said they wore a little overdrawn at present, but they were to get £406 from Government and they had £3OO good rates. CROSSING BRIDGES. The by-law in reference to threshing mills crossing bridges was read, and the Chairman said that Messrs Siegert and Fauvel ought to be given notice to repair the broken bridge or proceedings would be taken, Mr Quinn quite agreed with the Chairman. The Chairman said he would bring it up at the County Council. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence waa rend as follows : From Messrs Miles and Co., in reference to certain properties which they said did not belong to Messrs B. and G. Rhodes, and indicating the persons liable for rates. From Mr James Burnett, Railway Engineer, stating that he did not think there was the slightest chance of a level crossing being obtained at the Rangitata Station as required. There waa a road reserve along the east side of the railway reserve from Clogston Street to the Beach Road,! and a road reserve 12 chains north of the station. The latter would save a long detour ,to persons living north of the station.—The matter was adjourned for a month. From Mr J. Murray, asking leave to put a on the road between Mr A. Macdonald's and the Orari runs.—The Overseer in reply to the Chairman said there was a good deal of traffic on the road. - -Mr Canavan said there was a dog there that was not doing its duty. The gate would not be any more inconvenient than Ihe dog.—The request was granted subject to it being removed when re’ quired. / From the Clerk of the Geraldine Road Board in reference to Sharp’s bridge, and stating the Board had decided to await the result of further floods. From Mr Legerwood, asking for leave to fence the road near his place.—ln the course of the conversation it appeared that one man had a crop of wheat on a part of the road, and that another man bad a crop on both sides of it.—The application was refused. SMITHWELD. Mr J. T. M. Hayhurst applied that two roads at Smithfield should be opened.- It was decided that the Overseer report to a Committee, consisting of Messrs Talbot and Quinn, within a week, and that the Committee have power to act. Mr Johnstone waited on the Board with reference to a road leading from the Oxford railway bridge to the new mill at Smithfield. He offered to transfer a piece ef land to the Board in lieu of the present road. —It was decided to submit the matter to the sub-Commiltee already appointed to consider the Smithfield roads. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The Overseer’s report was next read as follows “To the Chairman. “gi ri __i hare to report for the past month as follows “Tenders have been invited for Contracts Nos. 75, shingling part of Seaton’s road } 76, formation of road , North Orari; 77, shingling part of Milford and Beach road; and 78, reforming part of road leading to Bolleston’e. “As the owners of land adjoining the Canal drain have sot signified their intention to bear part ot the cost of deepening this drain tenders have not keen invited. “The contractor for forming part of Stewart’s road has not yet commenced this work, although the time has expired for the completion of the contract. “ The deck of the bridge near Whittington’s was broken through by a traction engine attempting to cross it, after I bad warned the driver that the bridge was unsafe. “ A traction engine exceeding the weight specified in the By-laws of the Geraldine County Council passed over the Temuka B'idge,and, I believe, was the cause of breaking several of the deck planks. “I have had thrse extra girders put in Whittington’s bridge, and a new deck put an. “ I make ihe area of land in this district owned by Mr T. McAteer 65 acres. “P. Archer.’’ It was decided that the Overseer should re-let the contract on Stewart’s road if the contractor does not proceed with the work at once. With regard to the Canal drain, Mr Rolleston waited on the Board and said that he would accept the terms offered on behalf of the parties interested.—lt was decided to do the work next autumn. penny’s road drain, Mr Bisset brought forward, on behalf of Mr Thomas, the question of Penny’s Road draie, which wanted cleaning.—lt was decided to clean the drain if Mr Thomas contributed one-half of the cost. TENDERS. Contract No. 75—Shingling Seaton’s Road—E. Connihan, £lO6 5a (accepted). Contract No. 76—Formation, North Orari— Jonas Fiefield £2O (accepted); 6, Trumper, £2B 15s. No tenders were received for Contracts Nos. 77 and 78.
