GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.
, The monthly meeting, of the ’ Council was held yesterday. Present— Messrs J. Talbot R. H. Postlethwaite, P. A. Barker, W. Balfour arid W. Moody. . The minutes of the previous meeting i were read and confirmed. The Chairm to announced that the [ meetings re irrigation at Seadown and ■ Rangitata had been held, and the pro* ; posala of the Gouncil approved* of. The ( Upper Opihi Bridge was completed, the total cost being £1129, arid it was a very substantial one and satisfactorily erected, i There was no law in force regarding , licensing vehicles in the County, but the 1 Counties Act provided for by*jriws being / > passed by County Councils, ', and the * 1 Council could take the-matter. 1 The traction engine whicli had damaged 1 the Tenuku bridge last year had damaged i U again slightly. He (the Chairman) had sent out to owners; of spoil,. engines | notice not to use the,bridge,ibut he was , not sure whether the notices;:had reached I them in time. He thought, however, as i the prohibition of . engines - was made ’ public before, that any owner whose • engine bad caused the damage ought to i be made to pay for such damage, | Correspondence was dealt with as fol* 1 lows;— ; .; . From Messrs Measori and Marchant | notifying the completion ..of the Upper ; Opihi Bridge and suggesting that the approaches should be madeat once, From the Colonial Treasurer, notifying > that the Council's application for a loan of 1 £SOOO or £6OOO under the Gbvernment Loans to Local ; Bodies Act would be 1 granted subject to certain specified conditions being complied'with. . ... From the Public‘ Works Department declining to construct a road bridge over the South Opihi river.—After a discus* sion it was resolved—“ That the Minister for Public Works be applied to in answer to his letter of .December 23, 1886, that this Council does not ask Govern* ment to undertake the work, but to give this Council the control of-.the erection ofi| the , boundary bridge . over / the 1 Opuha, as the powers are defined under the Public Works Act Ameodirisat Act, 1884, clause, 9, sub-section -3. This Council considers this a necessary work, and therefore respectfully r asks-, that the control asked for be granted.” - Messrs R. Morgan, .and Bourn and Macdonald were gcsoted slaughterhouse licenses subject to ueual conditions. A letter was read from Mr G. F. Newman, applying fora license fora boggy to carry passengers between,Peel Forest and Rangitata, and one from Inspector Broham bearing on the same subject was also considered. , It was; resolved on the motion of Mr Barker,, seconded by Mr Poatlethwaite —“ That this Council ask the Selwyn, Ashburton- and TVaitski County Councils what regulations are in existence as to tcthe licensing of public vehicles and hawkers’ vans, and whether/such regulations are in accordance with the powers given in the Counties Act, 1886.’ After carefully considering the damage reported tc have been. done to the Temuka bridge by a traction engine, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Bal» four, seconded •by Mr Barker—“ That '4 the owners of the traction, engine be requested ta bear the cost of repairing the Temuka bridge canned by the engine passing over the p-mie, the repairs to be executed by the Temuka Road Board and the account to be 'sent to the owners ; failing payment legal, proceedings te be taken.” Account shaving been passed for payment, the meeting terminated.
