The Governor arrived at Auckland on Friday in the Hinemon. The following paragraph from the Melbourne refers to Mr A, L. Levy, formerly J .P. and secretary of the Good Templar Alliance, Wellington, whose sudden disappearance some months ago excited such commotion:—" The Metropolitan Licensing Court granted a temporary license to Alfred L.jLevy of the London Hotal, Port Melbourne, for the Chair of Music V •/ «•• ; n the Exhibition." Levy when in was a pillar of the temperance movement. A man named James Robert Mathieaon, recently discharged for vugrancy, at tempted suicide at Kaiwarra (Wellington) by walking ioto the harbor. At the Police Com the pleaded guilty and was remanded. Mathieson was until recently engaged as a clerk in a solicitor's office, but some time ago his brother was fouiid drowned in the harbor, and since then the accused has been drinking heavily. The Mayor of Chriatchurch hns telegraphed to the Minister of Public Works that the men discharged from the relief works Btated they could not find employment. Mr Richardson replied that he understood harvesting and other occupations would provide employment. He aßked if the Mayor knew officially that these men could not find work and intimated that work at the Sandhills must be closed, having been carried on as long as possible for good to fee gained from it.
Daniel Grace wap committed for trial at South Rakaia on Friday for attempted murder. He quarrelled with Jas. Brown at a dance, and when the latter was returning home met him and attempted to shoot him. His gun, however, did not eo off, owing to the cap being defective.
