POVERTY BAY.

The Government, says the Poverty Bay Herald, have under consideration the changing of the name “ Poverty Bay,” so inappropriately bestowed by Captain Cook upon this district. Captain Cook may have hud very good reasons for the designation, 6d the score of not being ablejto obtain firewood and water; but residents have far more reason for desir-. jog a change, as these necessaries are not now so scarce as at the time of Cook’s call, “ Poverty Bay” has an onuinoqf sound, and is a libel on the district so fertile in its resources. ' The very name has bad a good deal to do ’ with retarding the progress of the Bay, forit has been the means 'of deterring many outside people from settling amongst n*. This may seem strange, but nevertheless it <is a fact that many times has it been said hf outside people the very affix carries*with it poverty and starvation. Of coarse those who have already thrown in their lot with us know that the name does not in any way affect the fertility of. the district, but it is with others who know nothing about our riches that the word “poverty” carries with it a deterrent effect. The application is made under the 12tb section of the Land Act, 1886, which gives the Governor power to. alter the name of «qy district, and it is to be hoped a more appropriate affix will be made shortly.
