Judgment was: given for the plaintiff for the amount claimed and costs. : The Property Tax.— Th* Property Tax payments, the first instilment of which was due on Tuesday, are earning to hand better than in any previous year, and it is estimated that £30,000 was paid up to Tuesday night. By section 47 and .the following sections of this Act in officer commanding a volunteer company is: .‘empowered to inflict fines for’Certain offences and on non-payment of the same to report the case to the commanding officer of the diatriot, The fine still remaining unpaid, notwithstanding an order to that effect, the papers including the order are sent to the clerk to the Bench, who records the order, which has there and then, and without further judicial procedure, the same effect as if a conviction had been recorded, and a distress warrant is issued for the recovery of the fine and costs. A Kimberley Victim.—A few days ago we published a received by Mr Jabez Lukey from bis. brother Joseph, one of a party of Timaru,,residents who left a. short time ago to push their fortunes at Kimberley. The letter gave a more hopeful account of the field than had been received for some time, and stated that though the party bad hot been sucpessfal they were going to wait for the rainy season,'when they expected better luck. Shortly after this, however, the writer left the diggings and started for home, Whi}e journeying between the,diggings and Fort Darwin he was taken ill with sciatica,, and when be reached tbs Fort be was very ill , indeed. Having received medical attention ha was taken on board a vessel bound for Nydney, and died on the sixth day of the voyage. He was a single man, 38 years of age, and first ei-rived in Timaru 23 years ago, shortly after which be visited the Otago and Queensland goldfields. He was greatly liked; by his friends and acquaintances, who, with his relatives, will deeply regret his untimely death. '

Woodbury School Commute b.—A special meeting of the above School Com-, mittee was held on Monday, December 13tb. Present—Messrs Dean (Chairman), Flatman, Hammond, Heatley, Middlemiss, and Gick. The Chairman stated that he bad convened this meeting for the purpose of fixing a date to hold the scholars treat, ns the inhabitants were in favor of the treat being held on a proclaimed holiday, so as to enable the parents of children being present without loss of time.
