The New Zealand Shipping Company’s ship Waikato arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday, after an uneventful passage of 98 days from Loudon. She brings 1721 tons of cargo (amongst which are 107 packages of torpedo plant for the defence of the port), and four passengers. While a drove of cattle was proceeding along the Ohaupau Road at Waikato the other day, a ferret seized one animal by the nose, and on being shaken off showed fight to the cattle dog and was killed.
The Hon. Mr Tole, Capt Hume (Inspector of Prisons), and Mr Matthew Burnett (temperance lecturer), were passengers by the steamer from Auckland for Taranaki yesterday. Before leaving, the Minister of Justice authorised a number of unemployed to be taken on at the Mount Eden works. These are now fully manned, and men are still seeking work from the District Engineer,
At Wellington yesterday the charge of assault by Goldsmith, commission agent, against G, Fisher, M.H.R., was dismissed by tbe Bench as trivial, and one which ought never to have been brought into Court, William Sinclair, a recent arrival from Capetown, was drowned while bathing in the Taieri river on Saturday night. A man qatqed Malheson, who was bathing with him, was rescued in an exhausted condition. The deceased was a single man and bad no relations in tbe colony.
