GOVERNMENT LAND SALE.
One of the most successful land sales held in the district for years past took place in the Temuka courthouse last Thursday, when Mr J. H. Baker, Com* missioner of Crown Lands, submitted several sections in the township of Arowhenua and ether parts of the district for sale, There was a large attendance, the courthouse being crowded, and the great desire evinced by those present to secure some land proved how untrue it is te say that the working men do not want to go on the land, and that they cannot be forced to settle on it. Those who make such charges against working men undoubtedly slander them, for if there is one desire stronger than another in a working mao’s breast it is the desire of settling down in a home of bis own. The large number which the liberal administration of the Hon. John Ballance is settling on the land proves this.
• The sale yesterday commenced with ? sections in the township of Arowhenua, j, and all of them were speedily bought at prices ranging from the upset price of £7 10s to £l2. They were all quarterj acre sections, and were put up at the • upset price of £7 10s, the conditions of 1 sale being one fourth of the money at the 3 fall of the hammer, and the balance in 3 two months. In the event of the purchaser failing to pay the balance in two months bis section would be forfeited. ? The following is the result of the sale i—- ? Sec. Purchaser. Price. \ £ e. d. - 83 ...
