A MURDEROUS ASSAULT.
The ship Tiuaru (Captain Fullerton) 106 daya from London, has arrived at Wellington. Twelve days ago, during a heavy gale, all hands were ordered to shorten sail. One of the crew refused, and the mate Mr Bowling, proceeded to letch him from the forecastle, when the sailor struck the mate in the left breast with a sheath knife, inflicting a terrible wound. He was about to make a second blow when another sailor secured the would-be murderer. From intelligence brought ashore there appears to be scarcely any hope of the mate’s recovery. Later. W. Williams is the name of the man who stabbed ths mate of the Timarn, and the wound was inflicted on the right side, immediately over the lungs, There is little doubt that Williams would have killed Bowling bad a second seaman not interfered. The injured man has so far recovered as to be able to walk. The accused was brought ashore, and lodged in the lock-up.
