SOUTH SEA ISLAND NEWS.
Auckland, ;Nor. 13. The Island mail steamer Janet Niohol, arrived at Auckland on Saturday, with a cargo of oranges and other traits. She brings news of native outrages having!, occurred on board the Auckland schooner Jessie Nichol. On the 24th of August while the vessel was at anchor in Baratonga harbour, at 11 p.m., a gang of natives boarded the schooner and began to annoy the crew. The cook was on shore. The son of the captain" was first attacked, and. rendered unconscious by a blow on the head and was brutally kicked. Captain Short and brew then rushed on deok, but being without weapons and greatly outnumbered were separated and all badly maltreated, Maka Tane, King of Atiauand consort of Queen Makea of Baratonga, was with the natives and indicted them to outrage, saying “ kill the white pigs." This King visited Auckland last year, and was entertained at Government expense! After doing a lot of damage, and purloining some of the stores, the natives went ashore and had a feast. A complaint was laid before the British Consul at Baratonga, who fined Ilaka Tane 200 dollars and ordered him to find substitutes for several of , the injured men who had to bo left ashore. The cook’s condition was so critical that his deposition was taken, but he has since recovered. HM.B. Pelican has visited the grcup, and compelled payment of the fine. Tie captain also enacted a fine of 300 dollars from the natives of Nutiaro Island, who in August last committed an outrage on the captain of the Auckland schooner Atlantic by tying him to a tree. Captain Short’s narrative has been obtained via Tahiti, but the Jessie Nichol is expected to arrive at Auckland shortly.
