TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting et the Temuka Road Board took place last Tuesday. Present—Messrs J. Talbot (Chairman), Quinn, Canavan, and Bisael. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. chairman’s statement. The Chairman stated that with regard to the Orari River Board it wonld be necessary for them to pass a resolution striking a rate for that body. They must strike a rate exactly as their own rate. A letter had been received from the Geraldine Road Board asking them to reconsider their decision in reference to Sharp's bridge, with a view to having it extended. They had acted last day on a letter received from the Overseer to the Geraldine Road Board, who did not express himself in favor of extending. He saw from the report of the Arowhenua Town Board that that body was still of opinion that the Board had something to do with detaining the money coming to them. Of course this was quite erroneous, as there was no connection whatever between the money the Town Board was to get and the settlement with the Road Board, However, Mr Baker was cowing to town and he was hopeful he would settle it all. There was a claim for hospital and charitable aid, and ho saw no reason why U should be delayed. They would get their subsidy as usual, ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the xmount of £B7 12s fid and a charitable aid voto of £176 were passed for payment, leaving only about £2 to the credit of the Board. sharp’s bridge, A letter was read from the Overseer to the Geraldine Road Board, asking the Board to reconsider its decision with reference to Sharp’s bridge, with the view of having it extended. The cost of the extension would be £6O. In reply to the Chairman, the Overseer «aid there was a good deal of sheep traffic on it. Mr Quinn said the place was most of the time nearly dry. The Overseer said the river was very ■hallow except in times of flood. The Chairman read a letter from the Clerk to the Geraldine Road Board, on which they had acted at last meeting. This letter suggested to make the bridge fit for foot traffic, as it was likely the river would change its coarse, and the bridge would then be useless. The Chairman said the matter would require to be fully considered. It would ba useless to make a bridge it the river changed its course. The Overseer said he did not think it would change altogether, but no doubt a great deal of bank would yet bo swept away. The Chairman suggested to let the thing stand over for a month, so that the
Overseer should see it, and this was agreed to. CORRESPONDENCE. From Messrs Miles, Archer and Co., intimating that they were willing to have Mr McCaskill’s name substituted for their own on the rate roll.—The alteration was ordered to be made. From Mr F. LeCren, calling attention to the bad state of the road running through the Newlands property—one of the cross roads between Rolleaton's road and Bad ham’s road.—The Overseer was ordered to report on it. The scheme for irrigation proposed by the Ashburton County Council was laid on the table. ORARI BJVER RAT*. On the motion of Mr Bissett, seconded by Mr C tnavan, it was resolved—“ That in accordance with a special order passed by the Orari River Board, a general rate of one farthing in the £ on all rateable property in the said Orari River Board District be now struck, the said rate to be for the period ending March 31st, 1887, and to be payable in one sum at the Road Board office on Nov. Bch, ,1886.” overseer’s report. : The Overseer’s report was then .read, as follows; “To the Chairman. | “ Sib,— l have to report for the past month as follows—Contract 170, Cleaning drain near Greenaway’s, is completed and passed for payment. No. 67, tussocking, Rangitata, is almost completed. The other contracts in hand are progressing favorably. If the Boafd decide to shingle Seaton’s road, I would recommend that it should be done during the summer months; there are about 110 chains of this road that have not been shingled, and the cost of shingling it would probably be about £—. About one mile of the Milford and Orari road requires a light coat of shingle, on an average 8 yards to the chain. The Milford and Beach road has been badly cut up during the winter. The worst of the ruts have been filled In, but to make the road fit for traffic during the Winter it would require to be shingled.— Be Mr Bisaet’i Tapplicatlon: There are about 16 chains of Stewart’s road require forming. —Some 9-inch pipes are required, there being none of that size in stock. “ P. Archer.” With reference to the above report, everything was deferred until next meeting, with the exception of Stewart’s road, for which tenders were ordered to be called. The getting of the pipes was left to the Overseer. DRAIN AT MILTOED. The Overseer said he was sorry Mr Hayhurst was not present, as he had asked him to defer making the drain at Milford until after the meeting. Mr Hayhurst had offered to pay part of the cost if the drain was carried along the road instead of where it was agreed upon. After some conversation the Overseer was instructed to carry out his former instructions with regard to the drain, as Mr Hayhurst was not present. SMALL BIRDS’ NUISANCE. The Chairman said he did not think it was any use to buy small birds’ eggs. The only way in which they could be dealt with was by poisoning them. The meeting then adjourned.
