GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of this Board was held at the Board’s office on Tuesday last, being a week earlier than usual, owing to the regular date clashing with that of the Christchurch Show. Present —Messrs W. U. Slack (Chairman), F. JR. Flatman, R. H. Poatlethwaite, L. Grant, and J. Kelland. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. SMALL BIRDS’ NUISANCE. Mr Flatman said that an impression had got abroad pretty generally that the members of the Board were shirking their duty in not collecting the birds’ eges themselves. He would like it to bo placed upon the minutes that the members were not shirking their duty, tut that they were not allowed to collect and pay for the eggs, as Mr Ollivier, the Government Auditor, had told the Board he would not pbss the accounts for eggs collected by the'r members. A minute to this effect was made. TENDERS. The following tenders were then read and dealt with as under No. 198—Formation, fords, etc., Rangitata Bridge: J. Jiefield, £55; J. Webb, £49 15s; J. Bennett, £49; J. Mulvihill, £45; G. Bae, £42 12s; D. Gregan, £4O (accepted); A. Reid, £3B 10s (informal). No. 199—Formation, fords, etc., near Reid’s, Waihi river-bed: D. Gregan, £l9 ; A. Reid, £lB 10s (accepted). No. 200—Formation, Hawke’s Road, Rangitata Flat: G. Rae and Co., £B7 ; A. Reid, £57 10s; J. Webb, £56 10s (accepted). No. 201—Concrete and pipe culverts, Boundary Road ; M. Brophy, £l4 10s. —lt was decided|to call fresh tenders for this work. No. 202—Reducing grades, Pleasant Valley cutting; D. . Gregan, £4O; J. Beckley, £34 18s; A. Reid. £34 10s; B. Trumper, £29 10s (accepted). CORRESTONDENOE. The folio wing correspondence was read and dealt with : From Mr R, P. Wells, Gapes’ Valley, asking to have a piece of road running past his property shingled.—The Overseer was instructed to report upon the work. From Mr T. Taylor, drawing the attention of the Board to the state of Donkia’s Road, and asking that the Board would repair it, as its present state would interfere with him currying out a contract he had got for carting.—Decided to let the matter stand over till the next meeting, in the meantime the Overseer to report upon the road and Mr Donkin be asked permission to take shingle for the road from his property*
From Mr Cunningham, acknowledging the Board's letter covering fixed deposit tor £7OO sad enclosing receipt for same, also stating that the sum of £7 interest accruing to the Board had been placed to their current account.
From J. Sullivan, Pleasant Point, rt clearing gorse upon the road, stating that he had let the grubbing of the gorse, and asking the Board to clear an amount of •he scrub on the road that prevented him ploughing and making a good job of the work.—The Overseer was instructed to get the work done, aad give Mr Sullivan notice to clear the gorae within ,a.month. From Mr T. Wigley calling the. Board’s attention to a lot of dr|y and half burnt gorse that was upon the road between the old station and the road to'Baincliff. — The Clerk stated that this hail; been attended to.
From the same, agreeing to allow the diversion of the creek near the bush as asked for in the Board’s letter of 16th Oct.—The letter was ordered to bo replied to with thanks. From Mr J. Greenall, Pleasant Valley, asking the Board to allow him to erct a gate across the road between bis section and Mr Guerin’s.—Agreed to on the usual conditions.
From Mr V, Gapes, Gapes’ Valley, catling the Board’s attention to cattle wandering upon the road.—Attended to. From Mr F. W. Stubbs, Clerk to the Geraldine County Council, asking the Board to send him a copy of therefcolntion striking the rate for the present year and date upon which it was confiriheu, and also the amount the rate would realise.
From the same enclosing a cheque for £62 10s, amount of subsidy received by the Council and balance due on rates collected for 1885.
Fro* Mr J. W. Barker and J. Campbell, Woodbury, calling the attention of the Board to the state of the roid r running through Barker’s Downs and aloof the Four Peaks fence, and asking that it be formed.—The Overseer was instructed to report on the eame. r • From Mr A. Maxwell* Kaksha, again calling the Board’s attention to 1 |he road applied for by him, and askinjg to have the same formed before the coming harvest.—The Overseer was instructed to report on the work. From Mr Stubbs, Clerk to Geraldine County Council, asking the Board to forward the balance of their contribution, £ll9 11s lid, to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board.—Decided to forward the amount. '
A copy of the Local Bodies Loan Act was laid on the table. , OVERSEER'S REPORT, The Overseer’s report was read, and the following resolutions passed upon the same “ To the Chairman.
“ SiR, —I have the honor to report for the information of the Board as under Owing to the short time which has elapsed since the former Meeting, and the contractors not baying commenced work on the contracts let last Board day, I have very little to report on/ the pro* gross of the various works in hand.—. Geraldine Footbridge; As instructed, I have made an estimate of the cost of extending and repairing this bridge, and have forwarded the same to the Chairman of the Town Board- for theWconsideration.—Hoad diversion, Rae’s B|Rd : 1 have interviewed,■ Mr Angus Macdonald, and also visited the ground with him to explain the Board’s in reference to the diversion.. He agrees to let the Board have the'.necessary quantity of land at a reasonable cost; the Board to make good all fences on the line of road,—Kakahu River: I have fenced off the road where the river has encroached neat Mr Kellatid’s. I have also placed a few spars over the terrace at the same place to preterit scour.—Orari River: This river is fast encroaching on the road line above the bridge, und is now within a few feet of the road. The terrace will require fencing bff, and a few span placing ip the river-bed.—Gorse; As directed 1 have served notices in soma of the worst cases to clear and grub the gorse from the roads, and in travelling round 1 see action Has in several cases been taken to have it cleared. It will be necessary, however, to issue more notices.—Redcliff Slip: I have written to Mr H. H. Brown in reference to removing his fence, but as yet have received no reply. The slip is gradually getting deeper, and should very wet weather occur will require to bo attended to at once to keep the road open for traffic.—Rates: 1 have received and paid into the Board’s account the sum of £750 15s 4d on general rate account. This leaves a balance of £232 outstanding.—! am, etc., “ Wm. Shiers." Be the Geraldine Footbridge—The Overseer was instructed to write te the Town Board. Be Road deviation—The Overseer was instructed to interview Mr Macdonald re the transfer of land. It was decided .to do the necessary work at the Orari river. Re gorse upon roads—lt was decided to issue a few more notices. Re the Redcliff slip—Mr Flat man was deputed to interview Mr Brown on the subject. It was also decided to advertise a final notice re outstanding rates, deputations and interviews. Mr Brown waited upon the Board, and asked them to deepen the main drain through Belfield. The holders of the sections bad to deepen their drains, and it was no use their doing so until the main drain was deepened.—Mr Shiers explained the position of the' drains and sections.—Mr Brown having retired the matter was discussed at some length. It was finally decided to inform Mr Brown that, seeing tbe amount of money already spent in that district, the Board could not see their way clear to expend Any more money on tbe work just.at J sreMnt, until . they had received some, more Government. Mr Budd waited upon the Board to know what was intended' to be be done with regard to the road running through bis laud and that of Mr Lewis', and adjoining ths Board’s reserve. He complained that Mr Lewi? bad thrown a fence across the road and kept stock on it, which were damaging his (Mr Budd’s) fence. He wished tbe Board to compel Mr Lewis to fence his land fronting on to the road.—Mr Flatmim said the Board could not compel a private owner to fence his road frontages.—Mr Btidd said be knew they could, and in reply to Mr Flatman as to how the Board could do so, said by giving him notice,—Mr Flatman said they could not do that* but Mr
Badd was sure they could.—The Chairman said they could only give Mr Lewis notice to remove the fence across the road.—Mr Badd said that was what he WADted ( so that Ur Lewis could not keep his stock close to his (Mr Budd’s) fence. He had written to the Board before about
the subject, asd they bad taken no notice , Of the letter.—lt was finally decided to give Mr Lewis notice to remove the fence, which hs had put up without the sanction of the Board. : The Chairman brought before the Board the state of the crossing at Russell's'creek, and it was decided to call for .. tenders for pitching the same with stone. CEMETERY BOARD. Mr Flatman stated that three had recently been ten acres of land set apart for 5 a.,cemetery at Woodbury, and the Woodbury Domain Board had asked him '’ to enquire if it was the intention of the Geraldise Road Board to take it over or not. The Chairman said it was not usual for Bead Boards to take over Cemetery Boards ; they were under quite a distinct .Act He nought what was wanted was • Cemetery J; ,nrd nt Woodbuiy. ACCOUNTS.
