The Temuka Leader TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1886. PROPOSED JAM FACTORY.
The proposal to establish a jam factory at Winchester is at last assuming ,» definite shape. It is just about 12 months since we first directed attention to the necessity of one being started, and since then, references to it have been made from time to time 1 , till at last a letter appeared in these columns suggesting that Winchester would be a yery central plaoe for it. Major j Young Immediately called meeting ;and a Committee was appointed to { collect information lo as to ascertain whether the industry was likely to prove | a" success.' This Committee haye completed their labors now, with -the result that they are pyrfebtlyjsatisfieol that, j if sufr ,ficwnt' ; chpitai ;, -can-''be 'got';- the industry wiltpay. They have beenjwi to; believe thst.about 30 tons of fruit of all kinds cad be got in the district, and with 30 tons bf sugar added this would make 4q pi jam. This fruit can be got. at from Jone to two pence, per jib, the ' sd/rar at fourpence per Ibj and aj fcound of fruit and a pound of sugar will make, Averaging the prio» of fruit at three half-pence, and sugar a' fourpence, the material pf l£lbs jof jam will cost s|J V \There will be soma trifling expense besides this, such as jars and labels,;but'as the jars will sell, with thejaWithe : them will probably pay for both jars and labeli.
•|,to provide the Committee another halfpenny to coBt:of making; jam, and thns Jsejt down sfifa<>. sixpencp,)|lfi s£j£\ll&. ,; pri^ ; oij jwm is.; Best, 'sixpence per tb ; inferior, fivepence balf-penny per lb. There would therefore; be a; profit of from halfpence to two pencil per lb on ritak* ing jam, or from £l4 to over £l6 .per ton. The Committee came to, the conclueiori that theVe would be a profit of £lB, but we doubt whether... their ifigurei; Out of^hiß ; profit find, and the 1 oalaiice♦rrll'goi to 1 'the shareholders as dividends on their shares. The proposed 'ciipital if the Companyis£lsoo, and, the number of tons of jam Expected to be'made is from 4Qto; 50 for. the present. It will bo seen froni this that if,the whole capital; were subscribed/ • profit of between £3,and £4 per ton 'would pay 10 per cent interest to the shareholders. Weiiave heard of 1 a jam, factory that is paj ing 20 per cent; we have heard of, another that has had a terrible fitruggle for' existence. In toe Bfi^#'jifa/ : we ; "iiVe : _;'-hyard : .pf cheese factorjeatliat have paid handsome dividends ;i we: hare heard ot others that have a'othing' to spare, and others that have fallen through. It appears to üB, 'tnerefdrel'thalta great ;/ de > a i l i depends on the meffagfttient, and, so far as we can juilge, ifa.jam factory is Started |t will .pay...handsome!j' if properly mahaged. Sri fari as the information to band; goes we Bee no reason why:!it should not pay, jifbvl heartily recommend 'it' 1 ib'.ttie s ti dpi' 'readers.; The industry %, one , y whibh great>bjjon Jo folders .off mall...areas of land, In/theirleisure( time, t tliey J can cultivate i wijl, ; find employment in fieking the fruit during the, season.; ;;Tp such people it will be' a gre>jtblessing,- t > foTr''iri (,r ti6 / -otbejr way .couidjihey'make so'much out of their ilandi'as (CultijVating fruit, and' on this ground;we ; BUggeßt,to,.them the jadyis-. ability, of'doing tall in their power to render tbe~project a success, j What; to do how-'is tfafj lup as l mariy shafes as ! they ''can 1 ; and ;What (they mustdb in the future is to cultivate' as much 'fruit>-as ) they., can. pLetj them .Mmember t that the incannot be , eßt»slj"Bbed. ilt is want of capital which'has been ijuining. ajl the local industries, already in our midst; they, have'io l pay to the banks in the;shape of iqterest as| much: money isiiwould pay djividendq, and only* for this they would be in sj more prosperous'position. It is dcjsirable that the nW industry shall not be : thus, handicapped, and. thewayto avoid it v JB; to get up.the capital'necessary to carry; it oni independently, ofi; banks. The Committee-have decided to the capitalat£lsCo,!but it is more than probable that it will not be necessary. to< call it all up/ ;! Tf tbe whole of the 1500' shares are subscribed, we do not think that it. will be necessary to call up more than 15s per share of the money : that is, every one who takes up a sl|are of, the nominal value of £1 will not have to pay more than 15s. We strongly jjrge upon the people the desirability of supporting this project,' and to show their sympathy/withjt attending in largej numbers, iat . the public jrheeting which will be held next; iSaturday. I They may as well knew that lunless the meeting is well attended 1 the Committee feel inclined to take' 1 mucli more, ibtereßt*;in'. Tq. «y6id the danger of it falling throu_gb/.*fe hope ■that as rdany is possible will'be present.'
