PROPOSED JAM FACTORY.
A u meeting of ■ the aub-'Committee appointed to collect information and draw up a report with regard to the proposed jam factory at Winchester was held last Saturday .evening in the __ 'Wolseley Hotel. ; Messrs '&} iA. Young (Chairman), R. A. Barker, H. E. Smith, W. Bishop, J. M. Twomey, and the Secretary (Mr Q. A. Smith) were present. A'f'lbtter.'waa readVfrom Mr W. H. Blizard, Glentannel, stating that he had several years' experience, as a manager of <a, Ja,m .Factory in England, and offeriag his services'. ( to the Company. On the motion 'of Mr Twomey,-Seconded by Mr Barkery/it was resolved— M il,hat a letter be written to;'Mr W, ;; H.Blizard, intimating that his application will be kept in view, and-asking him to supply to the Committee all the information in his posseseioh- with'regar'd! to'ithe class of building arid of capital which would be required for a small jam factory, also the cost of making jam per cwt, and ' the probable profit thereon." ' Mr Twomey submitted p!«ns of a plant and building, prepared by Messrs Mercer and Duckdiahton, brass fennders, Christchurch, and also read a letter from the same firm giving the prices at which they were prepared to supply the plant. He also stated that the same firm had recommended him to write to Mr A. H, Maclean, of the Akaroa factory, who would give all information with regard to the industry.. He had written to Mr Maclean nearly three weeks ago, but had not received any reply since then. Mr Twomey also supplied to the Committee a vast amount ,of informa,t[pn, collected by Mr J. Hayhurat in.Eogland, and the whole subject was fully gone into. . After the matter had been fully discussed, the Committee came to the conclusion that a plant could be got at from £2OO to £250, including- fixings. Several offers of a rite for the factory were . then considered7--pi»p, offered an acre of, land in the, towriship J for £SO; another offered'l of an acre for £6O; and another offered 1 , oao .acre., and two cottages for, £250. -The, Chaijrrnatt said that he had seen Mr Rolleaton ;and spoke to him about' getting an acre\' of the railway reserve' from , the Government. Mr Rolleston had written to the !Governmenton the 'Subject, bur ijo "reply had yet been received. A. copy bfj ihe letter y writ'en by Mr Rolleston to the Government was then ' read. It gave the whole aistory of the railway reserve, and made i request to the effect that a "site for the factory should be set apart out of it.
