S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary moodily meeting of the South Canterbury Bo&.rd o I Education wanlieMon Thursday, Present —Mr J. W. Goldsmith (Chairman), Dr Foster, the Revs. G. Barclay and J. T. Smythe, Messrs W. B. Howell, J. Talbot and R. A. Barker. The Chairman stated that since the last regular meeting Mr Westropp, master of the School at Orari, had forwarded his resignation ; as also had Mrs Williams, sowing mistress of the Milford School. Mr fWhurst had been appointed to the Waituna School on probation, and as' Miss Boogden was under age, she was also appointed on probation to the Milford School. Miss Green had been appointed sewing mistress at Milford, The Architect stated that all the work’ reported as being in progress at las 1 meeting, were completed, and added that all other things were going on satisfactorily. The Board decided to adhere to their former resolution to the effect that the Architect should 'pay for a mistake made when the master’s house at Pleasant Point was being erected. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Howell and seconded by the Rev. G. Birclay— “ That in the erent of the new buildings at Totara Valley costing not less than £250, the Board make a contribution to the cost of £100.” Dr Anderson’s special report on the District High Schools was then read, and on the suggestion of the Rev. G. Barclay, was held over, to allow the Inspector and the members of the Board time to go over it.

t The North Canterbury Board haying telegraphed requesting that Dr Anderson be allowed to take up his new duties at once, and Mr Gow, his successor, stating that he was sufficiently versed in his duties to carry them out, it was decided to allow Dr Anderson to leave at once. Dr Foster and the Rev. G. Barclay spoke very highly of Dr Anderson’s services to the Board. Notices of motion bearing on the ap* point ment of teachers were then taken as follows: —By Dr Foster (1) “ That the present practice of the Board by which the Chairman and Inspector go through the testimonials, and refer them to the Committee according to the order of suitability of the applicants be adhered, to, with the addition that it ia understood that the Chairman is authorised to ex* elude from the list forwarded to the Committee those names which shall appear to him quite unsuitable.” No. 2 was an amendment on No. 1, and was tabled by the Rev. J. Smyth as follows : —“That, as hitherto, all applications for the post of principal teachers previously classified by the Inspector be transmitted to the Committees ; that in the case of pupil teachers and assistants of the minor order, that is, whose salaries do not exceed £--, the Board may confine the transmission of applicants to one or two ; that no appointment be made till after the name suggested by the Committee has been placed before the Board, along with all other applications and relevant documents, unless when special discretion is given by the Board to the Chairman for the time being.” Dr Foster agreed to the excision of all the words after the word “addition.” I The amendment was lost, and Mr Barker then put in the following as a notice of motion for next Board day “ That, as hitherto, all applicationsffor the post of teachers previously classified by the. Inspector and the Chairman be transmitted to the Committee, and that the Chairman appoint, on the Committee’s selection, except where he deems it advisable to refer the decision to the Board.” Letters were then dealt with - From the Sutherlands School Committee asking that a residence be built for the teacher.--Teacher to get lodgings. From the Opihi Committee, asking for a grant of £5 ; to remove closets.—£2 10s granted. From the Rangitata Station School Committee. asking that the School be enlarged, and that Mrs Mahan be appointed sewing mistress. — Held over. From the Milford Committee, asking for a grant of £2 10s for gymnastic apparatus.—£l 5s granted. Accounts were passed and the meeting terminated.
