The correspondence is still proceeding with the Postmaster-General of New South Wales rt cable rates. Sir Julius Vogel proposes to bring late telegrams on the question before the Government, and agnin submit the matter to the Cabinet's decision. This will be done not on account of any doubts he or the other members of the Government have expressed on the subject, but he deems the matter one of too much importance to be dealt with solely as a departmental question. The Cabinet meets next week for this purpose. The Government have received a cablegram from the Admiralty, suggesting that Government should next session legislate in the direction of regulating the s*le of intoxicating drinks to seamen belonging to Her Majesty's warships while stationed in New Zealand waters. The suggestion has beeen made in. consequence of a number of desertions, which are attributed to drunkenness. The question will be considered by the Cabinet next week, and it is understood that the Government are favorable to taking action in the direction desired.

The coach factory and blacksmith'* shop, belonging to Mr R. Somerville, Wellington, coach proprietor, was destroyed by fire at 5 o'clock on Friday morniog. The cause is unknown. Eighteen buggies, traps, etc., were lost. The building was insured for £290 in the South British, and the stock for £6OO in Phcanix office.

The Wakatipu, from Sydney, arrived at Wellington yesterday morning. The Himalaya, barque, 92 days from Glasgow has arrived at Port Chalmers.. Information has been received at Wellington that the steamer Lyttelton, bound from Femtown to Wellington, was wrecked on a reef near Beef Barrels. The crew were picked up and taken on to Nalson by the steamer Murray. The Lyttelton was a steamer of 86 tons, and was commanded by Captain Forbee. bhe was owned in Wellington.
