GERALDINE RACING CLUB'S SPRING MEEETINU. Stewards—Hon. L. Walker, and Messrs M. J. Godby, R. H. Pearpoint, W. Deßenzy, vV. Lawsoo, J. Greipgs, VV. Polliill, J. Mundell, D. Denoon, and R. Taylor. JtTDGB—Mr A. M. Ci«rk. Clerk or the Scales—Mr W, Lawsou, Clebk of thb Course —Mr G. C Miles. Starter—Mr . 0. A. Jefferson. HaNdicapper—Mr D. McKebzie. Secretary—Mr R. S. Cook. FIRST DAY. Lovers of sport who attended this meeting were favored with real spring weather, and such spring weather as only Now Zealand can produce. The hearts of htewards, officials, owners, trainers, jockeys, and, in fact, t-ll who had any interest in the success of the meeting, were elated when Thursday morning dawned clear and bright. From early morning the good people of Garaldioe were astir getting ready for the day's amusement. A number of coaches and expresses ware laid on for the purpose ot conveying intending passengers to the course, and one or two expresses came out from Timaru, drawn from thence by the hope of turning a fen honest shillings by carrying passengers. The weather was simply glorious. The course was found to be in excellent condition. There was not so large an at teodii.ee of the public as iB usually the case f>t the Spring Meeting of this popular Ciub. All the officials and riders wore crape, owing to the death of the Club's Srcetary, the late Mr D. McKeniie, and their the late Mr M. Studholme. Clr A. M. Clark actet as Judge on this occasion, and in the absence of Mr W. S. Armitage, Mr C A. Jefferson officiated as starter, and both these gentlemen carried out their duties to the satisfaction of all. One of Messrs Mason and Roberts' tottlisators were on the ground, and did a good business in proportion to the attendance. Messrs Mason and Roberts have erected a substantial-built office for their totalisator on the ground, and have, we believe, taken a three years' lease of the place. The Geraldine Brass Band were also present, noder the leadership of Mr T. Weston. Their playing contributed a good deal to enliven the scene, and was favorably commented on by many present. Mr S. Breadley had the grand a + and booth, and Messrs Fartell and Taylor respectively those outside. All seemed to do a very f*ir trade. The Geraldine Racing Club are somewhat noted for their punctuality ia starting the races, and on Thursday there was no exception to the rule, each race coraiog off at the time advertised. The following are the results : Maiden Hurdle Race, of 40 sovs, for all horses that have never won over 20 sovs in hurdle races in one event. About 2 miles, over 8 flight? of hurdles. Welter weights for age. Mr F. Cotton's b g King Arthur, agsd, list 51b ... ... (Lyford) 1 Mr S. Alexander's b g Temuka, syrs, list 81b ... ... (Allan) 2 Kob Roy and Clytie werd ssratched, thus making this a match. The two got away to a fair start, and cantered along togelher, taking.their timber well. At the back of the course King Arthur was leading by several lengths, which he increased at leisure until Allan-called upon Temuka, who responded, and decreasing the lead the two came upon even terma as they entered the straight. 4. capital race ensued up the straight, the two horses taking the last hurdle together. Temuka's bolt was shot, however, and King Arthur came in a winner by about a length and a half. On t he totalisator there were 18 subscribers, 12 on the winner, Dividend, £1 7s. Maiden Plate, of 40 aovs, for horaes that have never won ever 16 sovs of | public money (in one event on the flat). Weight for age. 1£ miles, Mr H. Thomson's ch £ Wairuna, 3yrs, 7st.. (White) 1 Mr D. Jefferson sent the three away to a good start, of which Wairuna got a little the best. Passing the stand for the first time they were lying close up in the order in which they finished. This position they maintained till coming to the back of the course, when Tasmania challenged and passed the chestnut, The two then raced along together, with Urland in close attendance, until coming into the straight. J Here all three had their whips out, and a I

capital race up the straight took placa, the chestnut winning by a neok amid great excitement. There were 220 on the totalisator, 63 on the winner?; dividend, £3 2s. Time, 2min 52J«ecs. " Q.RC. Handicap, of 100 soW, lOsova from the stake to go £»"the second horse; 1J miles. Mr S. Higgot's ch h Patrician, 4yrs, 7st 41b .. ... ... Hermitage and Spade .Guinea were scratched. This was the big event of the day, ind great interest was taken in it. After some little delay at the start, owing to j several false starts, Jefferson sent the five away in a bunch. Passing the stand '. for the first time they were still in a cluster, Kingask slightly leading, with Derwenter and Tarantalus on almost even terms with him. Going up the far side of the course the horses spread a little.' At the halfmile poßt, however, they again closed up, aid Patrician, taking the inside running, passed Derwenter, who had assumed the lead, and a splendid race down the straight between the two resulted in a win for Mr Higgott's horse byi a very short neck, Kingask, who was not pe'r,severed with, a bad third. Derby was scratched at the last moment, at which there.was some grumbling among those present. After one or two false starts the three got well away together, Flatcatcher showing in front, which advantage he still held when panning the stand for the first time, the three doing little more than a canter. At the far side of the course, however, Ohantilly came upon even terms with Flatcatcher, and the two then raced away from Fair Nell. Upon coming into the straight a Capital race ensued, Ghantilly winning as above. .■: Totalisator— 90 subscribers, 23 on the winner; dividend, £3los. 1 9st 31b (£3O) ... (Butterworthj 3 i Some little time was lost through the 1 unwillingness of Finance to come to the i post. Eventually he got away with a I slight lead. Passing the stand he had somewhat increased his lead, with Brunette and Larry together in close ! attendance. At the far side of the course Brunette challenged and passed Larry, and coming on even terms with Finance challenged him also, and the two racing hard left Larry considerably, in the rear. Turning into the straight Finance was slightly leading, and after a capital race home won by half a length, Larry coming in a bad third.
