SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
London, Sept. 18, In the race between Beach and Qaudaur this afternoon, for the Championship of the World and £SOO aside, Beach chose the Surrey side. At the start Beach was at .6 to 1, but there was very little betting. There was an enormous number of people present to witness the race, and : Beach was greatly cheered on making his appearance. The tide was moderate, and the weather was glorious. An even start was effected, Beach pulling at the rate of 38 and Gaudaur 36. At Walden’s wharf Beach had the lead by a length, and at the Soapworks was two lengths ahead. The Australian slightly foaled at Hammersmith bridge, which was reached in 8 min 58sec, Gaudaur reaching it ssec later. When Gaudaur reached Chiswick Eyot, he began to decrease the lead, arid when opposite rhorneycrofts, Beach suddenly faltered and stoped for a moment, allowing him to get the lead of a few feet. Beach resumed, and, spurting rapidly, assumed a slight lead. At the bathing place, Beach again stoped, apparently .beaten, for four seconcls. There was tremendous excitement among the spectators, and 20 to one was offered on Gaudaur, who was leading by half a length. Beach, who was loudly encouraged by his friends, , pulled desperately and caught the American, both men being evidently distressed. Beach gradually forged ahead, winning by three lengths. Time —22 min 29sec, Gaudaur 6sec longer. Beach beat the record to Chiswick Church. Many colonists were present., At Hammersmith 100 to son Beach were taken. Sept. 19The -stoppages made by Beach were due to exhaustion. Both men were rowed out at the bathing places, and Beach only resumed rowing when his coach told him that Gaudaur was done.
