RAURAPUKA LICENSING COMMITTEE.

An adjourned meeting of this Committee was held yesterday. PresentMessrs W. U. Slack (Chairman), and C. G. Tripp, Hon. L. Walker, and Dr Fish. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. If was decided to obtain a small book for the purpose of keeping the. rough minutes for future reference. EXPLANATION. The Chairman explained that the mooting to be held on Friday last had lapsed owing to no notice having been sent to the members. Mr Maslin thought it was not necessary to send a notice of the quarterly meeting. He thought it was understood that when no notices were aent the meeting was to be held. It was decided to request the Inspector to furnish a report according to the Act every quarter, and that the quarterly meeting be held on the first Wednesday in the quarter, as fixed by the Act. inspector's KIPORT. The Inspector reported that on the 2nd of July a breach of the Licensing Act had been committed by the licensee of the Geraldine Hotel, Robert Taylor, by permitting dancing in his licensed house. The case had come before the Magistrate, and bad, been dismissed, he ruling that such cases should come before the Licensing Committee. Mr Taylor explained that it was not a dance he wis allowing. It was simply a family party he had given to one of his family. He had not had one particle of gain from it, and had provided tea aud coffee for refreshments, the same as for a party elsewhere. Ho was quite ignorant of the fact that he was breaking the law, as he did not know tbe law upon the matter. Hid he done so he would not have allowed the affair to take place. Mr Walker thought that a person holding a license ought to know the law en the subject. Mr Taylor had committed an offence that rendered him liable to have bis license cancelled. Mr Maslin proposed that seeing it was the irbt offence, and taking the circum stances into consideration, the case be dismissed with a caution to Mr Taylor. Tltis was done, the Chairman pointing out to Mr Taylor that the Committee had the power to cancel the license. If Mr Taylor came up again ho would be more severely dealt with. Mr Taylor promised not to let such a thing occur again. INTERVIEW. Mr J. Mundell, on behalf of the Geraldine Racing Club, waited upon the Committee asking that the fees charged for the booths at the Club's meeting, £2 per booth per day, be reduced. Mr Mundell put in two letters which the Club had received relative to the fees charged at the Christohurch and Tiwaru race meetings. Those at Christchurch for the metropolitan meeting weie —2os per day per booth for the first day, 10s do for the second day, and 5a do for the third day. The fee charged at the Plampton Park maeting was 10s per day, one booth. At Timaru the fee was 10« per booth per day, the saddling paddock booth being considered a part of the licensed booth and accordingly not chnrge<l extra. After discussing the matter it was proposed by Mr Walker, seconded by Mr Maalin and carried that a fee of 15j per d*y be charged for the three privileges granted. This being all the business the Committee adjourned.
