TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Temuka Town Board took place last evening. Present— Messrs K. F. Gray, (Chairman), Quinn, Blyth, and Brown. mindtbs. The minute* of the last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence waa read — From the Property Tax Commissioner, stating that a voucher had been sent to the Treasury for the payment of £7 18s 6d to the Board, being balance of subsidy. —The Clerk reported that the money had been received and paid into the Bank. From Mr W. Hooper, applying for the lease of part of Cemetery Reserve 188, near the Volunteer Hall.—The Clerk was instructed to reply that the Board bad n* reserves to let. overseer’* report. The Overseer reported .that since last meeting very little 5 work had been done. One man bad been employed 8J days cleaning water-tables, etc. He had not yet commenced the patching as authorised last Board day, but it would be commenced now the weather appeared more settled. Vine .street required a few days work to clean away the rubbish . left by the recent floods. He also suggested that a double lot of pipes bs laid from Vine street across sections 44, 45 and 46 to the south side of the Waitohi road, thence to tt.S. 3699 and from thence to the Main South Road, bear (he Star Hotel, from thence take the pipes up that are already laid and keopao open drain. This, would he believed takeaway the water from Vine street except in very heavy freshes. The balance in (he Bank last Board day was £386 Is Id, and after deducting ac counts passed for payment at that meetng, ani allowing for money collected to the end of August, via., dog collars IQs, rates 14s 6d, balance of subsidy under Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act 1886, £7 18s Gd, there was a balance now of £269 Os Od. The Overseer was instructed to carry out his proposal re the Vine street drain. INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES' EXPORT. The Inspector of Nuisances stated that a complaint bad been rasde to him that day respecting the keeping of pigs within the town district, but he hadS not had time to investigate the matter. The Chairman said that after the recent bad weather some of the yards were in a deplorable state. In many instances sections were lower than the footpaths, and the water could not get away. It would not be long before the Board would have to take the matter of drainage in hand. tenders. Tenders were opened and considered for the erection of a porch to the office : —W. G. Rutland, £9 18s (informal) ; J. Molnness, £8 8s 6d; Thos. Edwards, £7 7s 6d (accepted). VOTE OF THANKS. Mr Quinn said this being the last meeting the present Board would have, he wished to state that he did not intend to seek re-election, as his private affairs required all his attention. He had found that in a public office they got more kicks than half-pence. He had plenty at first, especially at the hands of the local Press, but he had determined to forgive and forget, and let bygones be bygones; He had pleasure in stating they had no differences among them how. As they grew older they had got better. He must say {hat since the present Chairman had held office he had given it every attention, and had assisted members who at first were often working in the dark. Ha had great pleasure in proposing a vote of thanks to the Chairman for the able manner in which he had fulfilled his duties. Mr Brown had pleasure in seconding the motion. The Chairman richly deserved all that had been said. Mr B yth having expressed his assent, The Chairman said the resolution had certainly given him a surprise. He was glsd he had given satisfaction. Although at tjrst; new to the work, and despite diffi culties they had of necessity had to contend with, ho thought they got on very well. It was with gratitude he acknowledged the way the members had worked with him during their term of office. H had been a pleasure to preside ovjr the meetings, He thanked them heartily for the vote of thanks they had passed, He had thought of retiring at oae time, but now .he had determined to stand for re-election, as he did not think it took up very much time. They had a good deal of work to do at first, and he

did not think they should retire now they had got things into working order, a I thoutrh they had had a long term of office, and it might perhaps b« better to get new blood into the Board. He again thanked them for the vote. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £ls 7s were passed for payment, and the meeting then terminated;
