SOUTH ORARI SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the South Orari School Committee was held on Monday evening last. Present—Messrs Barker (Chairman), Bisset, Coles, Naughton, McLeod, and May. MINUTES. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. REPAIRS TO SCHOOL, BTC. The Chairman stated in detail the steps ho had' taken re plastering and whitewashing the schoolroom, which had been attended to,during the holidays, and read a letter from Mr Whitehead (Temuka), in whiclT he offered to do the master’s house at a price. Resolved— “ That the Chairman make application to the Education Board for a grant of £5 sterling to repair the master’s residence.” SEWING MISTRESS. Applications for the position of jSewing Mistress were received from Mrs Harrison, Miss M. A, Kelman, and Mrs Munro. Resolved—“ That Mrs Munro be appointed,” HEAD MASTER’S REPORT. The Head Master’s report was read. Since last meeting the average attendance has been : Boys, 20.3; girls, 13.2; total, 33.5. No. on roll; Boys, 27; girls, 21; total, 48. The report went on to say that there has been a marked improvement in the attendance of late. Even after striking off the roll the names of several children from another district, who, on account of getting a school in their own district, have lately ceased to attend, the attendance last week was higher than forjsaveral weeks past. The Committee expressed their gratification at the improved attendance, and were pleased to find that it was not necessary to take stringent measures at present. VISITORS. The Visitor reported that owing to the holidays ho deferred hie visit until that day, when he found everything going on satisfactorily. ilr Coles was appointed Visitor for the next month. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr Veroall’s seat having become vacant through his non-attendance it was resolved That Mr J. Ellis be appointed a member of Committee, subject to bis consent.” MrNaughton was appointed to get a load of dry firewood. After passing sundry small accounts for payment the meeting adjourned to the third Monday in August.
