Auckland, J% 7. * At the Supreme Court this morning, Charles Palmer, for uttering a i forged cheque, was sentenced to three , years’ penal servitude. Charles Keenan, for stealing from the person, got two years’ hard labor, and Mary Ann Dixon, for stabbing, received a sentence of six months’ Lard labor, Robert Kearn, for larceny, got six mouths’ imprisonment. Christchurch, July 7. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court were concluded to-day. A charge of inciting to arson was preferred against Nimrod Mitchell, formerly proprietor of the Zealandia carpet factory, which was burned down. The case for the prosecution rested on the evidence of a witness named George Richardson, £and completely broke down, a number of witnesses called for the defence by Mr Holmes stating they would not believe Richardson on his oath. The Crown Prosecutor withdrew the case from the jury, who acquitted the prisoner by tha judge’s direction. John Charles Jones was convicted of fraudulent bankruptcy, and sentenced to 'three months’ imprisonment without hard labor.
