S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held on Thursday. Present—Messrs S. W. Goldsmith (Chairman), the Revs. G. Barclay, and Jasper-Smyth*, Dr Foster, and Messrs John Jackson, John Talbot, W. B. Howell, M. Gray, and E. A. Barker. The minuies of the last meeting having been confirmed, the Chairman made his monthly, statement, which was unimportant. Ihe Rev. Mr Smythe then moved " That the meetings be held On the first Wednesday instead of the first Thursday in the month," but the proposition was negatived, as was also one moved by Mr Talbot that the meetings should commence at J 1 a.m.

A motion moved by the Rev. J. Smythe to the effect that the Board elect an Executive Committee of three of its members, iocludiug the Chairman, to transact any necessary business between the meetings of the Board, was also lofet. In aecordaoce with notice given, Mr R. A. Barber moved, and Mr W. B. Howell seconded :—" That the following clause be added to the scholarship regulations—' That in the event of uny parent applying to the Board for lea veto sand hiß child to a school other than thcf' one appointed, the Board may entertain the request provided the cost be not illcreased.'"—Carried.

Amongst the correspondence received from Government was a letter in reply to one sent by the Board re grants in aid of school buildings. The reply was not considered satisfactory. The Architect, Mr D. West, reported that the additions to the Masters' houses at Pleasant Point and Winchester, the- repairs to t.h» school at Winchester, and the new school buildiig at RaneriUta station had been completed in a satisfactory manner. The old part of the master's residence at Pleasant Valley had beon repaired, and the new resi'l. nees at Belfield, Silverstream, and Upper Waitohi were well advanced. Applications for the post of Architect to the Board were then considered, and Mr D. West was re-appointed on the same terms and conditions as heretofore, and od the understanding that all plans adoptod by the Board are to be the Boar.l's property. After considering the report of Dr Anderson on his visit to the Totara Valley rt a school there, it was proposed by Mr Howell, seconded by Dr Foster, aid carried unanimously—-" That No. 1 site for Totnra Valley School be decided upoa by the Board, and that the residents be informed that the Board are prepared to carry out the arrangements already made known." The Board then considered a letter and a resolution from the Waimate School Committee praying that Mr Ward, the Head Master of the Waimate School should be dismissed in accordance with the wish of the majority of the tocseholders as demonstated by the e!e*» tisn of the Committee.—The Inspector's last repoit on the school was read and was found to be favorable, and, as no specific changes had been made, it was resolved on the motion of the Ttev. Mr Barclay, seconded by Mr Talbot—- " lhat the Board do not deem themselves, from any information in their possession, in a position to accede to the request of the vVaimate Committee re change of Head Master."

Correspondence was then dealt with. The resignation of Mrs Worthington as Mistress of the Opihi School was accepted. The tender of Mr Geo. Winter for land at Raugitata was accepted, the rent to be 2s 6d per acre for the first two years and 5s per acre per annum afterwards ; the Board to erect fences.

The South Rangitata School Committer were voted £2 for mending fences. It was decided that the Rangitata Station Committee should be requested to send to the Board an estimate for a coal and firewood shed they applied for.

Tho application of the Kakahu Buah Commii'ce for a grant for fences, dwell-ing-house for mistress, getting the porch enlarged, and the playgroHnd shingled, etc., was held over. The "Board voted £2 to the Upper "> Waitohi School Committee for tree plant* • ing.

The appointment of teachers to the Waitohi and Rangitaia schools were left to the Chairman and Inspector. Miss Agnes McFarlane Donn was appointed assistant mistress in the Waimataitai School on the recommendation of the Committee.

After one or two other lsttsra of no interest to this district had been dealt with, and accounts passed, the Board ndjorrned.
