TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.

A Bpecial meeting of the above Board was held last evening. Present—Messrs Gray (Chairman), Quinn, and Brown. THE BALANCE-SHEET. The Chairman said the meeting was called to pass the balance-sheet. The balance-sheet Bhowed the receipts to have been £491 35s 7d, and the expenditure £337 5s 2d, leaving a balance of £15410s sd. The statement of aßseti •nd liabilities showed the assets to be £838.75,.and the liabilities £27 15s lOd, leaving £3lO lis 2d to credit. On the motion of Mr Quinn, seconded by Mr Brown, the balance-sheet was adopted and was signed by the Chairman. On the motion of Mr Quinn, eeconrle ' by Mr Brown, it was resolved to ad votive the balance-sheet in the Timaru Herald. THE TOWN BOABD BY-lAWS. A letter was received from the Colonial Secretary, acknowledging the receipt of the Town Board by-laws, and it was decided that they should come into operation on the Ist of June next. , Mr Quinn said it was agreed at a previous meeting that the by-laws should bo advertised in the local paper if the proprietor advertised them at half pjice, as had agreed to do. He was present, and he supposed he could answer the question. ' The Chairman asked Mr Twomey what answer he bad togive. : ' Mr Twomey said he thought the type had been distributed now. He did nort expect to get the advertisement, as it had been decided to take the advertisements away from hiaa. Mr Quinn said that in that case he would move that the by-laws be printed in the Timaru Herald. The advertising had not been taken from Mr Twomey. He would get half of it, and that ought to satisfy him, if he were not too selfish. - Mr Browu said he would Dot second the lriotion. Mr Twomey had agreed in the presence of witnesses to advertise for half price, and he thought they ought to compel bim to do it. Mr Quinn Baid it was not worth while. Mr Brown said it was not right for Mr Twomey to do this now through spite. (, Mr Twomey said it was a curious misuse *f language to call it spite. He offered to do the advertising for half price because then he was getting the advertising of the Board. Now they had taken it. away, just through spite. Mr Brown said it was through no spite he took it away. ' Mr Twomey said it was something like it. However, he would give his answer after he had' considered the question. The only thing he would consider was whether he would be breaking his word by not publishing thorn, as he had said he would do it. After some further conversation to the Bame 'effect, the matter dropped. RIVER ENCROACHMENT. The Overseer reported that he had examined the end of Cass Street where the river overflows, and would recommend the gully to be filled up, as that would prevent ordinary freshes coming down. With regard to the river, the Chairman Bftid if there was another fresh the whole « ~of. the riyer would come down Vine 'Street. The O veneer said about 100 yards of shingle would do what he recommended. , Mr" Brown asked would the Road v . .Board assist 1 The Chairman said neither Board could interfere with the river. Only a Board of Conservators could do it. , Mr Brown said something would have to be done or else the town would go. The Chairman said he saw nothing for it but to get a Board of Conservators. He suggested that a deputation should wait upon the Road Board to see what ' -they would do in the matter. On the motion of Mr Brown, the . ~ Chairman and Mr Blyth were appointed a deputation to wait upon the Road Board. The meeting then terminated.
