PROPOSED TOWN BOARD FOR AROWHENUA.
A meeting of the Committee appointed to take the preliminary steps for constituting Arowhenua a Town District was held nt Mr Edgeler’a residence last Saturday evening, Present—Messrs Leo (Chairman), Frew, E. King, Edgeler, and Boulter. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman, on behalf of the deputation which was appointed to wait on the Geraldine County Council, said the deputation waited on the Council at its last sitting, but at there was not a full meeting of the Council, that body declined to endorse the steps which were being taken to form Arowbenua into a Town District. The Council had no oblection to such a course being taken, but they merely wished to do justice to the Temuka Road Board, and withheld their sanction until they heard what objections that Board might have to make. In -a private interview with Mr Talbot, he (Mr Talbot) suggested they should take in the railway reserve, as it included a gravel reserve, Mr Edgeler said Mr Aspinall told him they could not touch anything of that sort, Mr Boulter said he bad read id the Act that the Governor had power to extend the boundary to the adjoining. Town District. The Chairman said Mr Rolleston could be asked te point it out to the Governor ' that the Road Board is willing to let the Arowhenua Town Board have it. It meant £l2 a year, and, besides, they would have plenty of shingle, A long discussion ensued with reference to the petition, after which it was decided to interview Mr Talbot, and ask him to obtain the sanction of the Council to tbe-petition. The Chairman thought it would be : advisable to advertise that the petition ia open for inspection to the Arowhenua ratepayers at Mr Russell’s. ; Mr E. King wished to/know if the petition would be open for inspection be fore it went before the Council. The Chairman said it would, and invited someone to propose that it be left at Mr Russell’s for inspection.: Mr Edgeler proposed, Mr King seconded, and it was carried*--* That the ' petition be laid at Mr Russell’s for inspec- : tion.” The Secretary was instructed to insett a implication in the Temuka Leader to that effect. Mr Frew wished to know if the Road Board cottages would be vested in the Town Board, if formed. Mr Edgeler said decidedly they would. Thv Chairman suggested 11 it one of the cottages, wth a little improving, would do for an office, an I nil the members expressed their approval of the suggestion. After a discussion with reference to the letting of the reserves, the Chairman said lie had a few words of advice to give. He had.no time to give to the public, so when the Town Board was once formed he would not be able to have anything to do with it. Now it was commenced, he would like to see it succeed. He would advise them to work for the good of the district, and to have no rancour amongst themselves. This being all the buainess, the meeting terminated with the usual vote of thanks the chair.
