The Auckland boot manufacturers have agreed to accept the joint committee re strike of operatives. The Southern Operatives’ Onion are sending contributions to the strike fund. The annual exhibition of the Society o f Arts, Auckland, was opened on Wednesday night with a conversazione, at which His Excellency the Governor made the inaugural speech. In the musical competition there were 34 entries. Mr A. Whitehouse, C.E., got the medal for the best song but he surrendered it to Mr H. F. Edger, who was second, taking a certificate of equal honor. The beat pianoforte piece was composed by Miss Bella Hitchings of Napier, and the best part song by Mr Whitehouse, Mr Edger being second. The half-penny post circular is now in full force in Wellington. An inquest on Robert James Wood, at Nelson, resulted in a verdict ot death from concussion of the brain. Deceased was a man of superior education, and had not been brought up to hard work. His mate says he frequently received remittances from Homo. He was a native of Northampton and has no relatives in the colony save a cousin in the Government service in Otigo.
