MR GLADSTONE’S IRISH PROPOSALS.
London, April 35. In the House of Commons to-day, the debale on the Irish question was continued, and the first reading of the Bill earned without a division. Mr Gladstone, speaking on the measure, stated that the Government did not regard the provisions relating to the Imperial control of the Customs and the exclusion of Irishmen from the Imperial Parliament as vital points of the scheme. Lord Elgin succeeds Earl Morley as Chief Commissioner of Works. A public meeting on the Irish question was held in Her Majesty's Theatre last night. The building was crowded in all parts, and the greatest enthusiasm prevailed. The assemblage was not composed of any one parly, all shades of political opinions bidng represented.The Marquis of Salisbury, who seconded a motion, characterised Mr Glad?tone’s Bill as an ignoble surrender, which, he said, would weaken the whole Empire. Mr Gladstone’s Home Kule proposal may pass the Commons by a sma 1 majority, but probably will be stranded when in Committee.
