The Chairman of the Board appointed under the Government Officers Guarantee Act makes a call of 3d per cent to repay certain defalcations of one W. D. Willcox, The amount of the defalcation was £12113» Bd. The Hon. Mr Ballanca and party, after leaving Alexandra, called at Whatiwhatihoe to see Tawhaio. Good wishes only were exchanged. Mr Ballance explained that he wished to give time to Tawhaio to consult the deputation which had returned from Auckland before the formal meeting was held. Tawhaio said he was glad to meet the Minister ; it was a good thing they should meet. Mr Ballance then proceeded on to Kopua. The Medical Association has affirmed resolutions to the effect that vaccination should be performed by registered doctors. Owing to the gradual increase of puerperal fsver throughout the colony steps will be taken to register midwives. The Association has protested in the interests of public safety against the action of Government in removing medical men from the position of coroners. Sir George Grey has received a birthday address from the Auckland Liberal Association, and the Rechabites’ Soc *ty. The Government state that the ranks of the unemployed are being increased both in the North and South. It is expected that as various contracts fall in the number will be still further augmented. The records of the Public Works Department during the past two years show a very steady average of laborers engaged on public works, the number nearly always being about 3000. When the unemployed have to be relieved it increases slightly, and when work is plentiful it decreases, but the average is never beyond 3100 or below 2800 in round numbers. A petition is in course of signature through the Wairarapa district in^favor of the release of John Freebody, who was sentenced at last Supreme Court sittings to two years for cattle stealing. The petition sets forth that Freebody is innocent, and was merely a tool of others. Mr H. Bunny expects to be absent from Wellington five or six weeks on business connected with the native reserves at Nelson and Greymouth. The Chairman of the Kaikcura County Council has sent a telegram to Mr Lance, M.H. R., desiring him to urge the Government to have a lighthouse erected at Kaikoura. Dr Salmond was on Thursday, at Dunedin, on the casting vote of the chairman, received by the University Council as the Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy, Mr Fulton declined to vote.
Mr Fraser was elected Chairman of the Otago Education Board on Thursday, on hia own casting vote. No interim dividend in the South British insurance Company will be declared. The premiums for the halfyear amount to £122,690 ; interest and balance, £49io ; total. £127,660. Losses and expenses, £133,610 ; balance to debit working account, £5950. The Epuni Licensing Oomraitte absolutely and definitely declined to grant licenses for the sale of liquor at the Hutt races, which created a good deal of comment in Wellington. On Thursday afternoon it was discovered that a portion of the course is within the boundary of the Hutt Licensing Committee, and this Committee is quite willing to grant licenses, but the position where the booth would bo erected is so inconvenient that it was decided not to trouble about it. The Club, however, made arrangements for a full supply of liquid refreshments t'> be on the ground, and the patrons of the course were supplied free. At the annual meeting of the Sailors’ Rest and Home, Auckland, it was proposed to erect a home at a cost of £3OOO from the Costley bequest.
