TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I saw in your issue of the 23rd instant a letter written by “ Pro Bono Publico ” on a Fruit Preserving Company for the Geraldine and Orari, districts. I agree wilh thj. writer, and think there is a great need for'such'" an industry in the district. Knowing, Mr Editor, that you are always ready to oush on local industry, I write to ask you to kindly give us your opinion in an article on such an industry, and supply us, amongst other things, with answers to the following questions 1. What amount of preserved fruit is imported into the district yearly through the Customs at Timaru ? What duty is paid on it ? and what is it sold at per lb ? 2. “ Pro Bono Publico ” says that Fruit Preserving Companies have been started in various parts of the colony, lu what manner are these carried on ? are they paying ? and what prices do they give for the various kinds of fruit ? 3. Gan the Fruit Preserving Companies mentioned by “ Pro Bono Publico ” compete with Ihe imported preserved fruit in price as sold here f I, amongst others, no doubt, will feel indebted to you if you could supply us with answers to the above questions, and all information relating to the tinning of the different kinds of fruit, and as to Fruit Preserving Factories in - the colony.
