London, March 18. Creditors’ claims against the London branch of the Commercial Bank of South Australia are saleable at the rate of 15s for every £1 of indebtedness. There are, however, few sellers. March 19. While the Navy Estimates were under consideration in the House of Commons last night, Sir T. Br.ssey, Member for Hastings, spoke strongly in favor of perodical visits being made by powerful ■ quadroon of British vessels to Australia and the islands in the Pacific. New estimates have been prepared of the cost of buying the estates of Irish landlords, in accordance with Mr Gladstone’s land purchase scheme. It is now expected th o th- expenditure in conm-ct on with the scheme would -.•>** <- xceed £20,000,009 insiead of £150,000,000 as previously stated. Mr John Bright, member for Central Division of Birmingham, supports Mr J. Chamberlain, Secretary of the Local Government Board, in the dissat’sfaction which he has expressed with reference to Mr Gladstone’s Irish policy. March 21. It has now transpired that there was no foundation for the report that the French Government had resolved upon sending 1000 r&fidiviates to New Caledonia. A proposal has been made that the system already in force with regard to Canada of sending English Industrial School children as emigrants should be extended to the Australian colonies. The Colonial Office has promised to consult the Governments of the various Australian colonies on the subject, with a view of ascertaining whether any objections are entertained against the proposal. Shipments of fruits of various kinds, packed under the supervision of the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria, have arrived in excellent condition.
