EXCITED ALDERMEN.

A discreditable scene—which, for an instant, was thought likely to terminate in a personal combat—took place at the meeting of the Sydney Municipal Council recently. Aldman Taylor had moved a motion having reference to iron girders in connection with the Centennial Hall, Alderman J. D. Young replied to him, and asserted that no one but Aldtrman Taylor would have had the audacity to bring such a motion forward. Jde also contended that chicanery had occurred in the matter. Aldeiman Taylor ejaculated, “ Chicanery ! In what dictionary did you get it at word Y* Alderman Young claimed the protection of the chair from interruption. He again essayed to speak to Ibe motion, and being further interrupted, he said, addressing Alderman Taylor, “ If the Mayor does not keep you in order, I will take care that 1 do.” Leaving the seat he generally occupies, he went in a menacing manner towards Alderman Taylor, and thereupon Alderman Burdekin and other aldermen got up and went to meet him, evidently with the intention of preventing a possible breach of the peace. Alderman Young waived them away, telling them that their assistance would not be required, and matters appeared to settle into r> Smoother tone. He then proceeded to the table alongside Alderman Taylor and poured ont a tumbler of water from a caraffe. Again he attempted to address the chair, and again he appeared to be interrupted. Thereupon he dashed the glass of water in Alderman Taylor’s face, saying— “Take that, then.” Alderman Taylor jumped from bis seat, and a fight seemed inevitable. Fortunately, however, no violence took place.
