A DEAR £lo.
Does anyone want to raise the wind f To borrow a tenter P If so, let him be very careful what be signs. Seriously, beware. Here are the sorrowful experiences of Mr Akeburst, greengrocer, of Liverpool. We may premise that he borrowed £lO, and after paying £69 found ho still owed £SO, and besides that kit creditor claimed all hi* furniture. However let us hear his tale: — On Jan. 7, 1884, he got into arrears. Mr Harlow (his creditor) then put a man in possession of hit shop for £lO. He paid the bailiff £2 in cash, which was all hs could raise, and signed a second promissory note for £4 ss. He was not aware that this wss for the bailiff’s expenses. He thought it was to clear off the debt. On January 20,1884, be went to Darlow, and asked him how much was owing. Darlow said there was £3B 10s due, and, under a threat of being sold up, be signed a third promissory note for that amount. He has since paid £29 9s 9fcd on this document. In Jsnuary last he believed £1 would have cleared him at he paid £1 per week all the previous year. He then called upon Darlow to see how much was due. Darlow spent the whole evening making up the account, and next morning presented a claim showing that £SO 9s lid. was due. (Laughter). The Registrar ; What did you do then f The debtor replied that it nearly broke his heart, as he had then paid £69 6s lid. Darlow threatened to distrain. , but was prevented by the neighbors. After this Darlow commenced proceedings in the county court at Southport, but did not succeed. He then appealed and won the case, as he (the debtor) had no money to resist the appeal; his costs in the county court amounted to £9l. The upshot of it all was that “the Registrar,” who we suppose ie a sort of R.M. seeing it was rough on Akeburst, ordered a Crown prosecution of Darlow. Hut we fear the greengrocer will never see bis Ir mint sauce ” any more.—Exchange.
