KAKAHU.

An occasional correspondent sends the following The crops in the Kakahu district are being harvested in first-class order, and only for the heavy rain on Wednesday night would have been mostly in the stack. There will be a fair average yield in the district—about 30 bushels of wheat and 40 bushels oats to the acre. The rain has caused the grass to grow, and it look* quite green, a pleasant change after the dry and parched appearance it has bad lately. There is a great furore over the appointment of a ranger in the district. It appears a petition was sent to the Board at their January meeting in favor of a ranger. The Board—at least a few members of the same—agreed to invito applications for a ranger, and it was to bp depidpd at their last meeting. But a counter petition was then sent in signed by 62, or thereabouts, ratepayers, against the appointment. I see the Chairman objects to the petition because the signatures are all written by the same person. He can have the original if he wishes it—it was quite an oversight that it was not sent with the copy. I saw the original, and can vouch that every name was porrect. There is some talk of forming a local company to work the coal, and to start a co-operative butchery and bakery ; and of getting the township formed into a Town Board, A person passing along the road Would npt recognise the old township, so many improvements having taken place lately.
