THE IRISH IN CANADA.

Comment has recently arisen in Canada as to the progress of the Irish race in that country. Canadian experience shows the Irish people to be essentially colonists, more so than even the Scotch or the English. Id Nova Scocia, in New Brunswick, in Prince Edward Island in Quebec, in Ontario, Irishmen and the sons of Irishmen are found in the front rank of the professions, of agriculture, of indutrial enterprise, while in the affairs of State they exert a large and legitimate influence. Since 1867 the assessed value of real estate possessed by the Irish people in Montreal has incressed from 3,500,000 dols. to more than 13,000,000 dols.; while on the books of the City and District Savings Bank there are eleven thousand Irish names, mostly of the working classes, whose deposits exceed 5,000,000 dols. The prosperity of the Irish is not regarded as exceptional to the Dominion, but rather as exemplifying the large and promising field for honest toil which the country affords.
