Messrs Murray-Sraith and Garrick, Agents-General for Victoria and Queensland respectively, Lave held the proposed conferences with Sir Robert Herbert, Permanent Secretary for the Colonies, on the subject of the incidence of the expenses of the New Guinea protectorate. Telegraphic despatches have been forwarded by them to their respective colonies giving the result of the negotiations, but up to the present the terms of settlement have not been made public. Tenders hare been invited, on behalf of the Government ot Victoria, for a loan of L 1,500,000, at 4 per cent. Tenders will ba opened on the 2nd February, and the minimum price has been fixed at LJO2. It is reported that Mr Parnell has expressed himself satisfied with the attitude taken by Mr Gladatone, and that he will not insist upon any explicit assurance being given respecting an Irish policy, The R.M.S. Rimutaka, from Wellington (left December 17tb), arrived at Plymouth yesterday morning, Her frozen meat cargo is in excellent condition. AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Melbourne, Jan. 26. The Unian Company’s s.s, Manspouri left yesterday afternoon for the Bluff. Sydney, Jan. 26. The Anniversary Handicap was won to-day by the Hon. J. White’s Tempe, Minerva being second, and Kathleen third. Seventeen horses started, and the race was won by a length. Time—■ 2min. 25^sec.
