TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Tenmka Town Board was held last evening. Present—Messrs Gray (Chairman), Mason, Brown, Quinn, and Blylh. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter from the Under-Secretary for Crown Lands was read, stating that reserve 820 had been vested in the Boat cl. The Commissioner of Crown Lands had been'requested to select a sufficient area for public buildings out of reserve 168, after which the balance of the reserve, and the other reserves asked for would be gazetted. FINANCES. The Overseer reported that the balance in the Bank was £129 Os 4d. by-laws. Mr Quinn brought under the notice of the Board the condition of the fence on the section occupied by Mr Twotney. The undergrowth of broom had grown out on the footpath.—The Overseer was ordered to see the fence trimmed. Mr Quinn also desired to bring under the notice of the Board the obstruction which bad frequently taken place on the footpath in Commerce street, opposite Mr J. Brown’s store. He had red-hot coals heaped on his head on account of opposing the by-laws, but as the by-laws were in existence he wished to see them carried out. The Chairman said Mr Brown had laid down crossings without the Board’s sanction, Mr Mason said the Board could not do more than inform the police, and let them watch the place. Mr Quinn did not wish to press the matter, but he had been requested to bring it before the Board. He thought if the Chairman brought the matter under the notice of the Chief Officer of Police it would be sufficient. After the minutes of Mr Brown’s interview with the Board had been read, the Chairman said he had seen how matters of the kind had been managed in Timaru. With regard to Cornish’s bonded store that was in a bye-street, and Cornish had no leave to back his cart in. There were worse breaches of the by-laws than the one referred to. There was a nuisance in front of the Bank of Hew Zealand which ought to be abated. Mr E. Brown said if steps were taken at all horses should be kept off the footpaths. The Clerk was instructed to draw the attention of the police to the fact that certain breaches of the by-laws had been committed, and to request them to attend to such matters in future. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £lB 16s lid were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned, GERALDINE TOWN BOARD. The ordinary monthly meeting of this Board was held in the Board’s office, on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs R. H. Pearpoint (Chairman), N. Dunlop, J. Hnffey, T. Farrell, W. S. Maslm and J. Mundell. Mr C. E. Sherratt, Clerk and Overseer, was also in attendance. MINUTES. The minutes of the last ordinary meeting and of an intervening special meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Outward correspondence was read and approved. Inwards it was read as follows From the Geraldine County Council, requesting payment of the sum of £5 6s Id, being the amount due by the Board as their share for charitable aid purposes.— Passed for payment. From Mr J. Talbot, Chairman of the County Council, in reference to the same. From Mr E, O’Brien, offering 15s per annum each for Town Sections No. 346 and 347, situate in High Street, for a term of seven years.—The offer was accepted. From Mr E. H. Brewer, stating that as he had failed to get black leather he had been obliged to use brown for making dog collars for the Board, in order to have them done in time.

Frem W. G, Sherratt, Town Board Ranger, stating that he had recovered 5s from one individual for allowing one horse to wander at large. As the grass was now decayed on the streets he intended to keep them clear of stock where damage was likely to be done. — Mr Mundell moved, Mr Maslin seconded, and it was carried—“ That the Ranger’s attention be called to a former resolution of the Board, that all stock running on the streets in the township be irp pounded.” From the Timaru Gas Coal and Coke Company, making a reduction of £1 3s Id in the Board’s account for tar. From Mr W. H. Price, Sydenham, offering to supply the Board with a fire engine, and enclosing price list.—Mr Dunlop thought that for the safety of the town, seeing that fires were now so prevalent, they should get a small engine.— Mr Mundell agreed With the’ suggestion. —Affer discussing the matter, the follow-

ing resolution, moved by Mr Dunlop and seconded by Mr Huffey, was carried : “ That a public meeting be convened at an early date to consider the advisability of starting a fire brigade in Geraldine.” From the Paymaster General, stating that the aura of £2 10s had been placed to the credit of the Board at the Bank, being the amount of fines recovered under By-law No, 2 on Oct. 12th. Prom Mr E. H. Lough, Town Clerk, Tiraaru, forwarding conditions for supplies and interments for the Charitable Aid Department. ACCOUNTS. Accounts ta the amount of £66 12s Id were passed for payment. THE DOG TAX. On the motion of Messrs Mundell and Huffey, the dog registration fee was fixed at 10s per head, and the Clerk was appointed collector. overseer’s report. This report was read as follows : “ During the month of December I have the honor to report that the two surfacemen have been working chiefly at the asphalt, and have now finished all the orders in hand. For the last week or so they have been engaged in finishing up the clearing out of the water-tables. The big stones that have worked up in the centre of the main road and Dr Fish’s road have been gathered up and removed, but the roads are getting very rough again. The dry weather and the number of sheep passing over the roads have contributed very largely, if not altogether, to the working up of these stones.—The rate roll is in hand, and I anticipate finishing the whole by the 12th January —the day appointed for the special meeting.—The dog collars have arrived. It would be advisable to advertise the price of the collars and registrar’s name, and where the collars can be obtained. I am, etc., “C. E. Sh ERR ATT, “ Overseer to the Board.” The report was approved, and the Board then resolved itself into a BOARD OP HEALTH. The Inspector of Nuisances’ report was read, and it showed that the town was In a fair sanitary state, notwithstanding the dry weather. The Board then adjourned till the 12th January.
