London, Nov. 20. It is probable that the French and Italian Governments will reduce their charge for the carriage of mails through those countries. Nov. 23. Messrs Butterfield and Spiers, insurance agents at Shanghai, have given orders to Messrs Sc-tt and Co., shipbuilders, at Greenock, for the construction of five steamers, each 2,6(0 tons, to he employed in developing the trade between China find Melbourne. Nov. 27. It has transpired that the report of the official committee which was appointed by Government to investigate the proposal of Mr A. C. Baker, of South Australia, for the establishment of a federal mail service between England and the colonies, is favorable to Mr Baker’s projects. Mr Thomas A Hendricks, who in November last was elected Vice-president of the Dmted States, is dead.
