GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Tuesday last. Present —Messrs W. U. Slack (Chairman), F. R. Flatman, and R. H. Postlethwaite. The Clerk and Overseer, Mr W. Shiers, was in attendance. MINUTES. The minutes of the last ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. correspondence. The following correspondence was read and dealt with : From Mr A. Foster, calling attention to a dangerous place on Foster's Road, Hilton. —Attended to by the Overseer. From Mr H. H. Pilmnn, Steward of Education Reserves, in reply to the Board's offer of £7 per acre for two acres from Reserve 1191 for a gravel pit, and stating that the tame would be laid before the School Commissioners. He also stated that the title for this piece of land, and for similar pieces taken from Reserves, could only be got by complying with the Public Works Act 1882.—1 t was resolved to let the matter stand over, as it was thought a better pit could be obtained on Mr Templar's land. From Mi A. E. G. Rhodes, in reference to the amount of the general rate on Boutcher's farm, Gapes' Valley.—The Clerk to reply, and state that the rate is 1884-5 valuation. From Mr E. H. Templar, Properly Tax Assessor, in reference to the ownership of Section 20,406, the section to which the road leads which Mr R. O'Neil applied to have closed. —The Overseer to make further application. • From Mr 0. Shaw, enclosing his account for surveying for the Board, and agreeing to reduce the amount by £2 2s. From Mr R. Dawe, stating he had no objection to the Board taking the water from Hammond's land across his property at Rhubarb Flat, if it is not taken from hislhouse.— The Orsrseer to arraDge to meet Mr Shaw before the work is done. From Mr Jas. Sullivan, stating he vas clearing the gorse off his road lines, and requesting the Board not to take proceed, ings against him.—Resolved : "That Mr Sullivan's name stand in the list of those who had been ballotted for." From Mr W. Langdown, Christchurch, in reference to his rate notice, and stating that he had Bevered his connection with the laud in question,—The Overieer to ae«

Mr Jas. Mailer, who now occupies the property. From Mr Wra, Hawke, Geraldine Road, drawing attention to the number of stock straying on the roads. Reßolved : "That an advertisement be inserted in the Guardian to the effect that a ranger will be appointed to impound stray stock unless they are kept off the roads." From Mr W. Badger, Christchurch, offering to supply copies of his compilation of " Statutes" at a reduced rate. From the Property Tax Department, Wellington, informing the Board that the rates upon Crown would be paid in a few days. From Mr J. H. Baker, Commissioner of Crown Lands, asking for information in reference to Reserve 1373 (the Pound Reserve), which the Board had applied to have vested in them.—The Overseer to reply and explain. UNPAID KATES. A ballot was taken of those persons who have not yet paid their rates, and ten names were drawn, against whom proceedings will be taken next Court day unless the rates are previously paid. overseer's report. This rrport was read, as follows: " I hnve the honor to report that the works in hand have made good progress since the last meeting of the Board. Two or three contracts have been completed, and several more are in a forward state, requiring only a few days to finish.— Gapes' Valley Road: As requested by the Chief Surveyor, I have had a survey and plan made of the position of Crown Lands in Gapes' Valley which it is desirable to have reserved for a stone quarry. —I have obtained a plan of a piece of land in the Beautiful Valley Saddle, which has been been taken in by survey for road diversion.—Redcliff Road ; 1 have ealled on Mr Skinner in reference to the diversion of this road through his property. He intends to interview the Board on this subject this day.—Kakahu and Beautiful Valley Road: As instructed, 1 have inspected the line of road leading over the hills from the Rainclift road to Beautiful Valley. The cost of shingling the steep grades, including four extra pipe culverts, would be about £ —. To lower, take off the slopes, and shingle the cuttings near Sullivan's hut, would increase the cost to £—. The road i 8 slightly out of repair in one or two other places, owing to Bcour of storm water on the steep sidingß, and the river crossings in Beautiful Valley require the boulders and large stones clearing from the fords. Otherwise the road in in very fair order. There appears to be a very little dray traffic at any time.— Gorse nuisance : 1 have eerved a large number of gorae notices since the last meeting, and I notice in several parts that clearing is being proceeded wilk; there are, however, still some very bad cases of neglect.— Rates: Since my last report I have received the sum of £Bl 8s Bd, making a total of £BSO 10s 3d collected to date. The outstanding rates amount to £73 16s 5d as per list submitted.—l am etc., " William Shiers " Overseer to the Board." The following resolutions were paised on the report : The Overseer's action re Gapes' Valley road was approved. Be Kakahu and Beautiful Valley road, it was decided that the members of the Board should visit the ground on Nov. 16th. Be the gorse nuisance, the Overseer was authorised to issue more notices. jRe rate, it was resolved that 10 persons be ballotted for. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £30115> 6d were passed for payment and the Board adjourned to the second Tuesday in December.
