I ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Oct. 15. Mr G. Main, a Director of a Bank of South Australia, advises the early extension of that Bank's business to the other colonies. Sir F. Dillon Bell, Agent-General for New Zealand, has assured the postal authorities that a favorable contract has been entered into for the conveytnce of mails •via San Francisco to Nev» Zealand and Australia. It has also transpired that New South Wales had made a suggestion to the American Government asking them to refuse to undertake the carriage of mails in America, but the latter refused to accede to it. Oct. 16. The Marquis.,of Salisbury, addressing a public meeting at Brighton last night, stated that it was impossible that Great Britain should permit the exercise of Foreign influence in Burmah. The London Chamber of Commerce approves of the attitude of Adelaide in reference to the imposition of a manufacturers' tariff, considering that such a tariff would imperil federation. The frozen meat from Sydney by the Bteamer Potosi is selling at 3fd per lb. Naples, Oct. 13. A sharp shock of earthquake took place at Palermo yesterday. A house was thrown down by the concussion, and eight persons were killed. Rio de Janeiro, Oct. 17. The Shaw Savill and Albion. Company's p.s. Doric left yesterday afternoon. Her cargo of meat is in good condition. Capetown, Oct. 17. The New Zealand Shipping Company's s.s. Rirautaka left for New Zenland yesterday evening. Calcutta, Oct. 17. Mr Bernard, Chief Commissioner in British Burmah, has dispatched his ultimatum to King Theebaw,' The demands contained in it are the honor able reception of British envoys at King Theebaw's Court ; the suspension of all action against the Boubay and Burmah Trading Company, and the appointment of a permanent British Resident at Mandalay. __# AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Sydney, Oct. 16. The Union Company's s.s. Hsuroto arrived from We'lington this, morning, and the same Company's s.s. Xtctomahanaleft for Auckland this afternoon. The health authorities report that all the smallpox patients at the quarantine stations are making satisfactory progress towards recovery. The result of the city suburban election has been made public to-day!. For St. Leonard Sir Henry Parkes and Mr Ivess were elected, defeating Mr ;Dibbs. Mr Wright, Minister for Public Works, has also lost his seat. For the city electorates the following members werp returned : Messrs John Davies, Toohpy, Cliffe, Forsyth, Barton, Copp. land, Burdekin, Reid, Abigail, O'Connor, Young, and Bethel. For Newcastle Messrs Lloyd and Fletcher were returned, defeating Mr. Ellia. The net result of the elections so far io decidedly in tavor of the Opposition. Oct. 17. Mr Trickett has gfcured his seat for Paddington, but Mr .Lusco.mbe has been defeated for Northumberland County. The advocates of local option have a majority of 18 among the new members returned.
